Rerailer

Hey All, my little boy got a vintage playmobil 'LGB' trainset for christmas (he keeps eyeing up my bachmann 1:20.3 loco's but he will have to be abit older to play with those!).

He is loving it but struggles putting the trucks/loco back on the track without help. I believe LGB do a rerailer but as I have a 3d Printer I was wondering if anyone has printed one for G gauge that they can share?

Thanks in advance,

I have a feeling that I have seen files for one on ‘Thingiverse’ , you may have to try several different searches to find it, but I’m sure there is one there somewhere,
cheers
Dave

I printed re-railers for 00, but I think that the bed size might be a limitation for G Scale. I will have a look.

Or this is a more attractive solution...

I think Daniel is referring to one of these

However the tram track inserts make a great railing system as well, just plonk vehicle on the platform and slide across. I found this perfect for my big Harz 2-10-2 tanks.

Both could be made out of wood or even plastic coated foamboard with relative skill required.

I like the idea of the bigger orange ones..

I wonder if it would be possible to to make a double-sided one? - 45mm one-side, 32mm the other.?

Now,there is a challenge!
You can have the IP of the idea. Just send me one, if you take it up.:D

Playmobil used to offer a ready-made one . . .

I suspect I have one in the garage, but it'll be in a box I can't currently get close to.

Thanks for all the replys , a very kind person on forum posted me a genuine playmobil re-railer , my little boy is over the moon to be able to put his coaches and loco back on the track himself now.

Thanks all!

Bonjela - tac here with a ? Are you still in the mood for printing longer rerailers? I'm in the market for one for my Gauge and G scale stuff. TIA.
I can't see why not. Is this the sort of thing you are looking for?

o.

I had in mind the long rerailer once made by Aristocraft..................... I can manage little locos, of which I have a few, and so can my 'little helpers'. It's the bigger locos and rolling stick that are giving them trouble - some of my locos are not only large, but VERY heavy, and with a multiplicity of wheels that seem to flep all over the place.

Have you checked out the Piko 35282 Powered Rerailer? it does more than you want it to do (hence the price). Chalk Garden Rail seem to be the cheapest . . .

I also think I have a longish all-metal one (simple slope to roll down) somewhere - memory says it was made by (or, at least, supplied by) GRS. I'll try to look it out.

memory says
As ever, memory was playing tricks. It would seem it came with a job lot that I once purchased. Having dug it out, it's a simple sheet of steel, 600mm long, pressed into a suitably tapered profile (high to low and wide to narrow) where the bottom edge has a centre depression that fits neatly between G scale rails (to which I have added insulating tape in case it needs to be used while the rails are powered). That channel is wider at the top so that rolling stock can be placed anywhere in the wider part of the channel and it just rolls off the bottom onto the rails. How suitable it would be for long locos with wheels that don't freely rotate is less clear but presumably they could be pushed down it with the same effect.

The good news is that there is a label on the underside saying where further examples could be bought. The bad news is that the most recent online reference to that name and address (for aids to build three-rail O gauge pointwork!) dates from 2010 . . . so it seems very unlikely that they can still be bought.

Now, who knows someone with a metal fabrication business???

Sorry! Just noticed this topic is in the 3D Printing section, so my apologies for dragging it in a different direction.

Cheers

Okay. That would do the job. It's all my big steam locos it would be used for, like the Beyer-Garratts.

Thanks anyhow.

David, I could do with on of those long re-railers for an elderly mate of mine, so if anyone is thinking of printing some, then I'll need a couple....

Laser cutting from wood or perspex might be a better option. Could make them up to 600mm long

I have some big LGB steam locos that have too many axles for easy track placement. I decided to make a re-railer using acrylic sheet 3 mm thick. It features 2 tapered edges glued to the base that end up at 45 mm gauge and extend beyond the base. They are both tapered at their tips to reduce their thickness. They were heated to acheive a downward angle otherwise they would be 3 mm above the rails. One problem that I hadn't considered was the pick-up skates. They were too low for the 3 mm edges and would jam into them as the loco started to enter the 45 mm gap. I had to chamfer the top edges to allow the skates to rise above them.
The whole thing is located over the rails using 2 pairs of guides glued on to the underside of the base. (need to zoom in to see them). Overall length is 850 mm and the tips extend by 200 mm.
All made using basic tools.
Alan
