Removing Rail Joiners from LGB Points

Hi

How do I remove rail joiners from LGB points?

There is a little tab that is embedded in the sleepers and I don't see how to remove the joiner without damaging the sleeper.

Any and all help appreciated

David

Take some needle nose pliers and open the joiner so the crimped part is at 90 degree angle to the bottom of the fish plate and the rail is exposed. Hang the part of point with the joiner off the edge of table. Then take the pliers and grab the front of the opened fish plate and pull down. The embedded tab in the sleeper will slide out under the rail and the joiner is removed. If force is applied incorrectly you can damage the little plastic clips that hold the rail to the ties (by lifting the rail up with pulling down). With some practice you will figure out how to avoid this by putting downward pressure with your hand on the top of the rail when pulling down

I should note this will destroy the fish plate joiner

You can just slightly open the joiner with pliers or small flat screwdriver, then slide the rail back out of the sleepers and joiner, then just pull the joiner out. Nothing destroyed.

Many suggestions posted in here both now and in the past tend to trash the LGB fishplates. This one does not, but don't do it on the living room carpet?

That last method pushes the rail backwards which, as jalicunning jalicunning said, is probably not desirable on a set of points. Am I thinking of the wrong track (I have no LGB track) but it is possible to drill out the little retaining pip from underneath?

Yes it does not work on points, there is another way that sorts that but I cant find the vid. But basically you use a short piece of rail in the fishplate, clamp that end in a vice with a small gap then tap the complete track out using an old screwdriver in the gap and mallet to push the point back out of the fishplate.

That would work better. I had a look on t'internet and found a few references to drilling out the dimple but no videos so it can be done.

drilling out the dimple
for what? if you refer to ( A ), it is not necessary. the moment one widens the fishplate, the dimple is free floating.
(only if you want to re-use the fishplate the dimple must go. (second pic)

if you want to do something about the rectangular prolongation of the fishplate ( B ), with a screwdriver and a small hammer one can beat it into a 45° angle (direction as the orange arrow). that would save one or two "wiggles".

Okay, like I said I have no G track to look at and dimly remember something about drilling out the dimple. Seems it doesn't apply in this instance.
