Re-entry to DCC, SPROG 3 Problem, Trivia

Over the last couple of months I've attempted to resurrect my DCC stuff. Along the way, Windows crashed and I had to reload my laptop, which delayed progress.

The new SPROG 3 worked great until last week when it refused to run 2 20605 Schoema locos slowly at once, or 1 of them at over 60% throttle. After checking the 'slot window' for current draw, I discovered it bouncing all over, from .351 to 1.85. Resetting the max current from 2.401 to 2.499 A didn't affect the issue.

On a wild thought I replaced the 14v 3A power supply with a (regulated) 18.5v 3A from an old laptop. That is a solid fix! Don't know whether the original supply was bad or just inadequate, but a higher wattage supply fixed the problem.

If 100% efficient, then the two supplies would give 42W and 55.5W respectively.. So 32% more power from the larger supply.

My guess would be at lower voltage, you were just pulling a little too much current from the smaller supply.
