Hello!

Just bought this loco on Ebay. The price translated from Swedish crowns was 275 £ with 10 % off with coupon seemed to be reasonable. I like this loco because it is a Classic LGB and also because of the big plow, which can be modified for real work as we already have watched here on the forum. Everything work as it should exept for the sound. It works for a while then its fade off and there is only some distorision sound from the speaker. If I try it once again next day the same happends the whistle goes and it sounds for about 5 minutes and later it is no more. Sometimes the sound is weaker too. What is wrong? Even the smoke is faulty and won't be warm. Everything seems to be correctly connected, the Cable to the tender and so on. Under the Shell of the tender everything seems as if it was new. emoticon-0121-angry_1_.gif

Welcome to the forum.

Are you using MTS/DCC or analogue for power....

Okay, so which controller are you using?

It might be that you haven't got enough amps to run the smoke and sound....

In order for the sound to work, you will need about 6 volts on the track.

So if you run at a reasonable speed, all will be well.
If you stop the loco, do you still get 'standing sounds' (coal shovelling etc.)? - If so, there is a power-buffer in the loco.
This will keep the sounds gong for a short-while.. If you are then running slowly, the power-buffer will discharge, and the sounds will fade away.

Similar problem with the smoke unit. - You will need a good 6 volts on the track for the smoke to work well. - This may mean the loco is running faster than you would like.

Another problem could be if you are using a 'starter set' controller. - This may not produce the amount of power needed for the loco, sound, and smoke.

Which is where I was going, but in slow time!

Good points, well made Phil....

Thanks!

I have the controller 5007 together with the 5006 power supply. No, I can not hear any standing sound as it should.

That's quite an old system as newer LGB kit has 5 figure numbers.

But I'm assuming it's an Analogue 5A system from the information you have given.

There should be enough 'juice' to power the smoke and sound then, so I guess it must be a loco fault....

Yes Gizzy and Philip, probably it is something in the circuit card of the sound module. The loco itself runs and lights as it should. There is no manual for this model to find, only drawings for service and repair, but there is an owners manual for the earlier 2019 S. This model have a 9 V backup battery in the tender like similar Bachmann's. When my LGB suddenly work again also the track magnet make the loco whistle and ring in the bell. When the sound don't work you only hear some weak activity in the loudspeaker.

After a period of time the male plug at the locomotive end will break wires right where the connect and may not be visible, easy to fix just remove, cut 1/4" off and reconnect

Is this the loco you have....

Yes, but in the Colorado & Southern version, thank you very much for this information. My is made around 1992. Today I placed the loco on some track on the table, and yes, it whistled and moved with sound but only for 10 secs.

As you are running DC, does this require a 9V PP3 battery!

I must admit that checking (and changing) the backup battery was one of my first thoughts on this, but I assumed that was one of the first things that the original poster would have tried..... I'm also not sure how a weak/dead battery would actually cause the effects that have been described?

Jon.

This could be a few separate faults,
the smoke could have failed due old age or From previous use,
the battery for sound could have failed
and the wiring coupler could be faulty,

As said the wiring coupler, causes intermittent or even no sound,

Start with checking the wiring coupler and a new 9v battery and see what happens

Think you for your answers and your ways to solve my problem. :) In one of the LGB users manual for a similar mogul they write:
"Hint: If this model is not used for a long time, its capacitors will discharge, and the sound system will operate erratically. To recharge
the capacitors, operate the model at brisk speed for about 30 seconds. This model does not require a battery." So i followed their advice and now it seems to work. The air-pump sound also works when you slow down and stops.
