Primus Stainz, sadly with lots of bits missing!

Rather a shame this is in such a poor state (as in missing loads of detail parts, nothing irreplaceable but you'd pretty much need to cannibalise another whole Stainz as a parts donor for this one) - because it's one of the now-rare Primus editions.....

The seller does still seem to think that it is possible to convert a Stainz to 32mm gauge with "a bit of work", though..... I suppose it depends how much you consider "a bit" to be! ;)

now sitting on my work bench,was this version never fitted with lights as it has no evidence of them being fitted.

cab is badly marked, replaced most bits from spares box.
it will live again
 
I'm not sure about the lights - the Primus items were very basic, cut-price versions of LGB items (though entirely above-board and still produced by LGB for a department store chain), so it is possible that one of things left off to trim the price was any form of lighting. Have you actually dismantled it? If there is no internal wiring for any lights, then I'd guess it was never fitted.
There is a little about Primus in the back of the Greenberg's LGB guide, but not a lot of detail on the specs - and no mention at all of the pale brown cab (Greenberg's lists the Primus Stainz as dark green), so unless this one post-dates the publication of the Greenberg guide (1988-89?) then it seems even more unusual....

Would love to see some photos of this once it's been restored to complete condition! :bigsmile:

There are a couple of coaches to go with it on ebay at the moment. A few bits missing but probably restorable.
 
theres no sign on any wiring ever being fitted the solder tags are clean and no evidence of screws ever been fitted to the chassis.
I am debating how to restore it,i have spare lamps and wiring and also some working smoke stacks.
any suggestions guys,should i leave as is or upgrade it?
 
Reckon it's pretty conclusive that they were supplied un-lighted, then. Other than that, I assume it's very much a standard Stainz of the period? As to how far to go with the rebuild, I guess that entirely depends what you plan to do with it - if it's been bought to run, then no reason not to go the whole hog and retrofit lights and smoke (and maybe MTS chip it if that's your thing, of course). On the other hand, if you want it as a "collectable" example of the Primus brand, then I'd simply replace the missing detail parts and keep it as close to original as you can.

Yes, it's possible... I did it with a loco from the 30th Anniv set.
"A bit of work" consisted of new internal frames and a Lehmann "Toy Train" motor.
Then, of course, re-profiling the wheels, and shortening and re-knurling the axles.

Then filling the boiler with batteries etc., which were later moved to a tender with R/C.

Quite a useful loco after all.
 
Nice conversion job, Rob - I'd certainly consider that a fairly big "bit of work", though! ;)

quick update,have rebuilt and repaired the chassis,replaced details with parts i had in stock,but missing whistles and a handrail.
going to rebuild with lights and a smoke stack.
Have a hugepile of spares on order from germany (modell-land)
will post pics when finshed.
