Thanks, Dave, I'll have a look at that. I've noticed before they have had Plaympbil in, but so far nothng of interest. What I am looking for is an LGB Toy Train Aral tanker.

Well, if they are selling Playmobil loco's with Massoth decoders fitted.. They have to get them from somewhere??

Last Sunday 29th March, I received the week's topics from G Scale forum. One topic was an announcement that Playmobile were having a sale. My interest was piqued and I surfed the site coming across a Ferris wheel at £27. I immediately thought this would sit well with Sky Ride I have by Jagerndorfer. Ordered and paid for it arrived three days later. It has a battery controlled lighting but the wheel had to be cranked by hand. Always after a challenge I dug out some old Lego motors and due to the size of this unit, 20", I elected to use the heavy duty motor. Assembly of the structure was so easy but everything that clipped in also received a slight drop of cyno glue to lock it in place. The motor was pretty easy fix using a Lego motor mounting block and rods I fashioned a drive shaft which was drilled and glued into place through the small gear in the upright frame of the structure, further epoxy was used to cement the motor mounting block, motor then fitted and various voltages were used right down to 3volts but in the end I chose 4.5 volts on an adjustable DC plug PSU. I also used some light jelly grease from Bachman for the plastic gears. Looks great and for next to no money I have a working Ferris wheel that seem to be popping up in many towns and cities these days. Have a look at this video and see what you think

Further to this I have a water tower and a container loading overhead crane coming and just sourced a motorised roundabout!

Hi Chris, thanks for details of your project which I would like to copy. I have the wheel on order. I don't have any old motors to hand so will need to buy new. I think I have identified the correct motor and battery box (this will be placed away from a mains supply in the garden) but cannot see any reference on the LEGO website to a "motor mounting block and rods ". Could you advise where I could source these; I'm not even quite sure what I am looking for at this stage!

Thanks in advance.

The Playmobil motor to fit the Ferris Wheel is 5556 it also fits the Flying Swings and the Spinning Spaceship ride.

You can control both the direction and speed with this unit.

Thanks for the information Walter. Unfortunately, after a few minutes of searching online I can't seem to find the 5556 in the UK or Germany other than a couple at stupid prices (starting at £50 and rising) - which would rather negate the original intention.

The Playmobil solution would be be better but Chris's LEGO solution looks the more cost effective at presemt.

Since I wrote this article I came too across the Playmobil motor and bought one as I had also come across and bought a Breakdancer ride that it could fit. I also detached the pay booth of the Ferris wheel and this will be located between the two rides and I think it will look better. Playmobil are suppose to release a new ride this month as it is on their web site if that is of interest.
The block I mentioned has the usual male and female Lego locating studs/holes top and bottom but has five holes through the sides. The drive shaft goes through the middle and each of the two side holes have the mounting studs for the motor. If you go down that route I can put some in the post to you once I know the length and type of motor you may use. As for the drive shaft I had some carbon fibre bit of rod kicking around so using a diamond tipped wheel on the dremmel carefully cut four channels into it so that it locked inside the Lego motor shaft. The other end was epoxy'ed into the small gear that drove the larger and outer wheel of the Ferris after I drilled out the hole to allow it to pass through as a tight fit. A touch of epoxy each side of this arrangement locked it in place.

trust this helps

Chris, thanks for the details and your kind offer but I'm afraid your solution is beyond my skills and experience; no dremel, no carbon fibre rod!

Can you tell me where you found the Playmobil motor and was it at a reasonable price? Its theotetical list RRP seems to be under £20 but as I said all I've been able to find is £50 and up.

Yes they are expensive and I think this is because Playmobil no longer list them. I bought mine on EBay so if you type this number in the search box for eBay 17012064905 he has two left do it will be your decision.
