Looking at your first picture..
The inner of the two holes, on the right, appears to have a hex-socket-head in it?? :think:

Though it may be one to query with Walter??
 
Just a thought, JonD, if you (gently!) prise out the two ballast weights, maybe you can access something? Does it clip together?

Jon. I dismantled one some time ago. From what I remember I carefully bent the two tags on the top into an upright position and then gently eased the outer guides for the skate assemblies away from the body at the top (not the skate) end allowing the whole lot to come apart. If you have trouble I'll try and find mine to photograph.

I checked my eight locos and all have a screw in the innermost of the holes on the base.

No need to prise the ballast weights out, they, come out like a greyhound from the traps if you're not careful!

According the my notes on dismantling one to fit a decoder a few years ago:

Remove two screws on the bottom of the block and prize open the clips on each side to open the block.

Aha thanks guys n gal. The skrews are no longer in place and the weights are held in place with what looks like that horrible glue we used to use on White Metal Kits donks years ago. Will prise weights out in the next day or so and see how I get on.
 
My half pennies worth:
When you do get it apart you should see a nice little twin worm motor, at each end of the motor shaft is a plastic moulding into which is fitted a little brass disk. (It may be hidden under old grease.) Do be careful not to loose them, as they control the end float of the motor shaft. They are removable for cleaning by sliding them upwards. If badly worn they can often be turned round.

Here's a couple of internal shots. The fact that the weights are glued in may not be an issue. Some of these had a single punger pick up behind an opposing wheel on each end of the chassis, hence the + mark near one of the outer holes on the chassis. The fact that no wires are visible may indicate no plungers are fitted, in which case the chassis should split without issue.
 
So the brass discs presumably serve the same purpose as the little shaft-end ballbearings in early LGB gearboxes......?
Wonder why PM decided not to go the ballbearing route?
