Piko Railbus & 194 locomotive

Hello all,

Has anybody put a Massoth XLS decoder inti either the Piko Railbus or Cl 194 electric loco as im hoping to use the original wiring but reading some of the instructions with these they only show it for there own decoders,

Any help will be much appreciated, Many thanks

Gosh I put a Massoth XLS chip in a 194 back when they first came out, not tricky as I recall but was a long time ago probably 2010/11. Piko stuff is pretty easy, but not using a Piko chip will require some fancy work for lighting, ie using the XLS chip circuits rather than just a plug in job.

That sounds like I may need to get the Piko chipset then and reuse the Massoth XLS somewhere else, may have dropped a clanger here then ahhhhh,

I did it on the Piko BR194 with a Massoth decoder MA 8150001. I used this Massoth one because the Piko decoder was not available on the market.
On the Massoth website (wiki massoth) you can find the following pdf : Piko-Krokodil-E94_DE_massoth_umbaubericht, which is of great help.
Opening the BR194 is very easy. No difficulty at all.
I installed the Piko sound module 36197 as well.
Here is how I installed the 2 modules.

Well,that is a sort of yes and no, the Massoth will take as much wiring in on any loco, for the 194 it should be pretty easy to wire from the screw terminals in the Massoth Chip to the screw terminals in the 194 board. Just make sure that you take good notes of what you do in case you need to undo things and remember that the lighting circuits from the Massoth Chip are at fluu track voltage so you need to alter them before you run the loco and that includes testing.

So surely it's safer just to fit suitable resistors to the lighting outputs? I would always do it that way and leave the decoder outputs set for full track voltage, that way there are no worries if a decoder later needs to be reset or a new one fitted and someone forgets to change the lighting CV settings.

Many thanks for the replies, all very helpfull,

Ive already got the XLS decoders for both unit and loco and would have hoped (wrong as normal) that the wiring would have been a straight swap but the they have black wires coming from the pickups and then go into a joiner ? and red and black looks like back to the motors, with all that said ive no idea how the lighting works as its very easy to see the terminals on the xls and fitting. The info sheet with these are obviously designed so you use Pikos own decoders but i was trying to stay with Massoth decoders .

I totally rewired a Piko 218 as could not sort out how to fit the xls into it thats why I was hoping to use Pikos wiring and just install the decoder.

Ive looked on the Massoth Wiki site but cannot see conversion there,

Ive found the conversion of the railbus on Massoth Wiki but there is nothing for the 194 locomotive, does anybody have this please,
 
If you have information for one, other models from the same manufacturer will be similar..

Knowing what you already do, I think you will be able to do this?

If you do not have a meter, then a small battery and bulb, will allow you to work out which wire is which track pickup.
Then you can use the battery to check you have identified the motor wires, and if two motors, which need to be connected together, so both run in the same direction.

Piko lighting, can be 'interesting'..
I have found bulbs and LEDs in various mixes. They seem to use 'black' wire for the common, so this can connect to your Massoth decoder + output.
A 1k resistor, and your small battery, should make bulbs glow enough to identify the wiring, LEDs will light (but not be destroyed, if wired incorrectly)..

Start with getting track and motors working..
Then work-through the lights..
Then smoke. - If fitted / required.

Step by step.. Keep wires you are not using out of the way (and insulated!).

If in doubt, ask, post a photo..
