Paying a Private Seller with Paypal

I've looked on the paypal site and I can't seem to find the answer. I want to buy an item listed in the classified ad's and the seller is asking for payment with paypal.

So what is it that I actually need to give to the seller - either by phone or email - to pay for the transaction?

Many thanks .... John

If you have the Seller's email address, you can use this within PayPal to 'find' the Seller.

You do not need a PayPal account, just a credit o debit card.
Part way through, you can choose to send it to 'friends and family' and as a 'gift' (no fees for the Seller).

But what has not been said is that if you buy it on the EBAY site the option to pay will use your PayPal Account to pay the item when you have created one. So moral is if you wish to buy from EBAY you need to create a PayPal Account to be able to pay remotely. You used to be able to pay by Cash in collection but not sure that still works. However EBAY still need that PayPal Account to be able to capture their selling and commission fees if you list any items in the site.

The only thing I might say (and I may be wrong) is that if you pay via "friends and family" you might not have the same level of protection if anything goes wrong with the purchase as you would with a business transaction.

Friends and family incurs no charges unless there is a currency change. There is no buyer's protection so only use it if you know the seller. If a seller is a business then they should not ask for 'friends and family' as it goes against PayPal rules, they are after all a business themselves. If they find out you are evading their fees for a business they have been known to temporarily suspend or even totally cancel accounts.

Note that during this coming year eBay is rolling out a new payment structure which will cut out PayPal (which it doesn't own anymore). So no PP charges unless you purposely choose to use it but eBay fees will rise.
