For anyone wanting to dabble in 'craftsman' style wooden kits, I can heartily recommend the Ozark Miniatures "Backwoods Diesel Boxcab" kit. (Especially when they offer a spring discount, or similar.)

The kit is tricky to find on their new website - however, I ordered one and it turned up a week later. Not sure how long it might take to the UK.

It comes with a Hartland power truck, so for track power you just connect the wires and away you go.

This is the Ozark photo of a completed kit - mine will be pale blue!

All you need is a good wood glue and a general purpose glue for the metal parts (couplers, poling pockets, headlamp, air tank.)

This is the extent of the wooden parts - floor, 4 sides, 4 corners, and the door slides. Piece of cake.

Looks a good candidate for lots of detailing and perhaps even stuffing battery rc into it, would certainly make it a stable runner.

Have had a look at your conversion, be nice to see the complete job.

As for batteries, have a look at my Piko 25 tonner. I used all sorts if tricks on this and on my 2 steam trams (using Deltang for the Trams) using NiMh Batteries. You should be able to get a few AAA under the body front and perhaps either side of the wheels. Then there will be less if an issue inside the cab. A tool box could be a big help for the MLS as I have done in my 25 tonner and you will get ok performance with 8 batteries. Hope this gives you some pause for thought.

Ps I have given up with LiPo, not happy at thinking about removing them for a charge or having to watch them charging and secure safely. Ok some will say I am over the too with LiPo but that is just me.

I haven't. I usually remove them as they last for several sessions, and I don't have my own layout - the locos are all on display shelves.
I am told the Hartland trucks likes 12V, so I am putting 3 LiIon 18650s in individual holders - 2 in the back under the window and 1 in the front under the dash shelf (for balance.)
