One heck of a lot....

What, only one Stainz but a whole Amtrak train?
Best move your finger slowly away from the danger area :giggle:

Tell me about it! I have already spent the next 3 years railway budget so I don't think Mrs P will be too pleased if I start throwing bids at this lot. It's only 3 miles up the road as well, I could collect these then carry on to Top Slots and Trains!!:tmi:o_O:mask:

To resell, or buy more?

What am I saying!!!
:(:eek::oops::oops::rofl::rofl::rofl:

Sad to see someone's interests ending like that! Not sure about the wisdom of "Job lot" either!

Someone will either get a bargain or a bidding war will commence. Either way someone will probably get a good deal. If this lot is as a result of a sad demise the family will be happy to see it all go as one lot. Can be very trying to sell a big collection in bits to say nothing of the work involved listing, packing and posting. I know all about this as I was doing it all for two years before I moved. At the time it worked well for clearing out years collections of differing interests Model Railway wise.

According to the way I read the ad, it's not a bereavement sale, but someone having to give up the hobby due to declining health. Either way it's sad of course. :(

Jon.

I had to sell my setup in one go due to the size of the collection plus the timescale to move it. Eventually sold it all to a dealer near Berlin for a pittance - just goes to show he could sell it on at a whopping profit.

It does make you wonder about the wisdom/folly of having a large amount of g scale, especially when I go into the attic and realise that a lot of the boxes actually have loco's/wagons/coaches etc in them. At least when I point me toes up a lot of the stuff will be ready boxed!!

The owner is seriously ill, so a sensible precautionary sale.

Actually I was worried by the phrase 'hang up his whistle' as I have two antique DB whistles on a CFL lanyard hanging by the office door
A german railwayman said he thought they were shunters whistles, having different tones, and appear to be made of bone.

Somebody still got a pretty good deal, I reckon, at that price..... especially if they take the track too.

Jon.

There could well have been 6-800 quids worth of track at current second hand prices.

Still very sad and I expect we can all learn from this, well those of us geting on it may be worth thinking about thining out the stuff that does not see the light of day and have better newer nicer less to play with? Much easier on those that will be left behind plus selling quality in smaler amounts will always be easier than a lot of lower priced kit that still is BIG and costs lots to post.

No problem with my stuff Jon, it all goes to the young man who has been assisting at the CFR since he was three. He has a fine collection at the moment and mine will surely enhance it.

Estate planning is something we often forget. My wife looks at my collection of big live steamers and says they are all going in the trash when I die. I have persuaded her to ask my friend to help her sell them.
But it is very difficult for a widow or family to dispose of the Dad's collection. EM Gauge Society had an "Estate Assistance" group of volunteers [when I was a member, 40 years ago,] who would advise and assist someone trying to dispose of a collection.

The 16mm Society have this as part of their package..

It is certainly worth thinking about what will happen to your railway empire when you have gone.
It may well be other family members do not know the value of your collection.

Another item to consider is an 'electronic will'..
All the details of the myriad online accounts we have these days..
How would loved ones be able to deal with subscriptions to magazines, societies, email and website accounts?
What should happen to Facebook sites, online photo collections, blogs, YouTube videos, et al??

I'd thought I should make a DVD with a picture of everything railway related (with an estimated value against each one). The boys could then realise some cash for their mum. I'd open with "If tha's looking at this, tha'll know av popped mi clogs"!

After a major health scare a couple of years ago I have catalogued all of my railway stuff (G and HO) using a simple software package called Model Train Catalogue http://www.modeltraincatalogue.com/download.html
