New Garden New Railway.

As i have mentioned on my other thread, i have moved into a new to me house and have loads of Boxes of LGB to unpack and do somthing with.
With the progress of the years i am going to create a 30" hight track (sorry 900mm) the first question is for outdoors whats the best boarding to put it on? I am guessing 18mm T& G proper wood coverd in roofing felt?

How would the Name "Spa Bahn" sound? (LGB Austrian / German stock)

Can't see anything wrong with Spa Bahn (not knowing the German for Spa). I used heavy ply and felt on my extension - just make sure any joints across the boards are sealed. The edges of the felt (bent over) need to overlap any timber framing (about 10mm) so the water doesn't run under but just drips off the felt.

Oh and have a look at your measuring 30" is aprox 760 mm! I'm a pedantic get:)
 
I think Spa is perfectly acceptable in German, though of course they also use "Bad" (Bath, in terms of a Mineral Spa) as a prefix to many town names.....

Well, according to Googly Translate, all of these are acceptable translations of "Spa" into German:
Spa, Kurort, Bad, Badekurort, Heilbad, Thermalbad, Heilquelle, Mineralbad, Mineralquell......

So I reckon that just plain "Spa" will do fine! :)

If you can get away with a Metre ir a kittke bit mire you will find it even better. You could try Decking as I have witg felt. My new build wil give you some ideas:-

Thanks for all the input. the Spa bit obviously comes from the "Droitwich Spa" connection where the railway will be hence the concoction of Spa Bahn.
 


its been raining prity well all the time since the last post. This is where i am starting from, its about 20ft sq if i leave a path arround the side. further expansion may be applied for later. (dont tell the wife)

I am the new kid on the block, quiet righly said before , " Bad or Kur Ort" would be the equivalent for Spar.
I would not settle for Hammelburg though, We in Germany use the term "Hammel" at times for a person who is not excactly the fastes in work or not the brainiest either ( like our plumber ) could be classed as a swear word!
But nothing wrong with Spar Railway. I am in progress of planning and building my first garden railway and I have not found a name yet either.
Best of luck anyway, oder viel Glueck beim bauen as we say in my country.

When naming a layout it is good to remember that the German language is full of good resource for 'misinterpreted' translated meaning...
Whilst driving down to Hamburg recently, we stopped at a service station for a bite to eat.
On leaving the premises I noticed this over the door....

How open minded, considerate and also complementary I thought.... or maybe it was a command... it was rude to refuse.......:confused::eek:

Yes, it is funny , but it means also " Have a good journey!" On this subject, we went years ago to my sisters wedding in Berlin with our kids sitting in the back of our car. After we left the ferry in Hamburg and joint the Autobahn/motorway the kids started laughing in regular intervals. After a while we ask what was so funny and to share their amusement and they said that they noticed the signs next to the motorway " Einfahrt" and" Ausfahrt." which mean of course exit and entry of the motorway.

On the other site ,as I was new here in 1983 and came to Cumbria I noticed little shops the sign " gift shop" above their entrance! Well , Gift in German means poison , so I came under the impression that they sell toxic materials open to the general public. How wrong could I have been!

False friends can be a danger in any language, that’s words spelt the same but with a totally different meaning.

Mike i will remember never to "Gute Fahrt" while standing in the station.
 
At the weekend, we stopped for a break on the edge of civilisation (there ain't nothing but snow in the Southern Alps (and even that was in short supply)). Plastered across the public dunny was a sign advertising "Free Wi Fi".

To revive this thread, I need to sort out picture posting again as photobucket who I used to use have gon all subscription on me. So what’s the bast way to post picture s in a thread these days?
 
It's not difficult to post them directly on here, they just need to be smaller.
