New arrival from the US

I bought a copy of the US publication, Garden Railways, a few months ago, mainly because of the excellent cover photo of a large LGB European stocked layout which really took my eye.

While leafing through the magazine i came across an advert from Trainworld.com and they had the lovely Bachmann Baldwin 2-4-2T for the excellent price of $124.99, half price. I ummed and ahhed about it then recently, when the exchange rate suddenly changed in the favour of Sterling, i decided to go for it.

Ordering was simplicity itself and including P&P which was airmail to the UK, I paid £140 for it and on Friday, got the card from Parcel Force telling me I owed a further £40 for VAT and import duties, so, total price, £180 which for such a lovely model, seemed to me to be a very good price.

It hasn't had much running yet due to inclement weather and other things going on, but although a truly US outline loco, as they were sold outside the US (and operated in Devon of course) I think it will sit very nicely with my fleet of mainly European outline locos. I just need to change the couplings to LGB style and clean the track and continue with the gradient to the bridge over the pond, and off it will go, hauling a rake of coaches along the very unfinished railway, but as i show in another thread, development is continuing, but slowly.

jeez , they really stick it to you lads for imports.

I order things from china, Germany, Italy and spain-never once had a duty.

True Steve but the UK list price is £349.95 on the Bachmann website and it's not available!
Maybe we'll get better deals in the future but it's a lovely model so I'm very pleased with it even with the duties etc but 20% of the loco cost is UK vat which we have to pay.
Looking forward to changing the couplings and trying it out on the railway with a trailing load.
