Been selling 'em for cockpit/instrument lights to aeromodellers for years. I used to wire them for them but after a while...
The easist to do are those that are a 1.7mm pimple on a 2mm x 2mm square base with axial leads.
Yes the ones that size I bought had conventional leads out the back; http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/100-x-1-8mm-Mixed-color-LEDs-Free-Resistors-LED1-8-/270713931321?pt=AU_Toys_Hobbies_Model_Railways&hash=item3f07cec639&_uhb=1
Cant seem to source them 1.8mm flashing though...
You can also buy 3 colour premade signal blocks too; http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/PCB-Mounting-1-8mm-Traffic-Light-LED-Pack-of-2-/300896453991?pt=UK_BOI_Electrical_Components_Supplies_ET&hash=item460ed38567&_uhb=1

These ones have 2mm dia cylindrical lenses: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/100-x-2mm-Mixed-color-Mini-LEDs-Free-Resistors-LED2-/270713931278?pt=AU_Toys_Hobbies_Model_Railways&hash=item3f07cec60e&_uhb=1
