Hi Everybody,

I spoke to Mike Wolf the other day and I thought I should share some info on his G scale Big Boy. The G Scale Big Boy should be out in June 2016. He also stated "We re-tooled the Tender to make it an Oil Tender as the 4014 Big Boy that is being restored will use. We have added a SMOKING WHISTLE as we had on the G-Gauge Triplex. So when you blow the whistle in DCS smoke will come out of it. It has two powerful DC Motors. Every G-Gauge Collector will need this engines as it is the most famous MTH has ever built. It will now come with PS-3 Sound System that now includes all the DCC Functions. All MTH prior G-Gauge Steam Engine had PS-2, which didn't have DCC." I saw it at Germany last year at the toy fair and it looked spectacular! He's going to take some pictures and videos soon so I will post them once I receive them. Click here to see a sketch of the big boy

Best,

Ken Bianco Jr.

"Every G-Gauge Collector will need this engine". . . . . . . Well, at $1300.00 I'm not sure that one will be needed here.....

Sorry, but that actually appears to be relatively reasonable. Particularly when you look at UK Prices for a Harz 2-10-2t at roughly €1800. A Big Boy is considerably more for your money. Sadly I am not into US in the Garden. But I would still like one!

The dissapointment for me is that it is clearly billed as 1/32 scale. Although it shares the same track gauge with G Scale, in UK terms it is very much Gauge 1. The giveaway is the fact that it is a mainline prototype as opposed to narrow gauge. Not a problem for those of you who do not mind mixing scales. If the advertised price is not a mis-print, I think it represents phenominal value.

The list price on Aristo Mallets was around $900 and the 2-8-0 consolidation was almost $1200 I believe, so the price quoted for the MTH big boy is right in line.

Not saying everyone can afford the larger locos, but it is not unreasonably priced, and it does include a kick-ass smoke system and DCC, no DCC or super smoke system with the Aristo.

If it were Live Steam at that price I would certainly have one to run at G1 Open House events. Though even at that price it is tempting to turn into a RC Battery job. With good sound it would go down well I reckon.

I have lots of curves on my railway and although they are fairly generous in size and this loco would go round them it would like rather silly do so. I would love one but price and length make it an unrealistic proposition for me. I think it would be more accurate to say "every G-gauge collector will want this engine"

I came to this conclusion some years ago when I had the chance to buy a challenger at a very reasonable price. Shame because they do look good.

I hope it does sell well.

I have a nice longish fairly straight run of around 70ft that it could stretch its legs on. But doubt it would run round my Continuous Run with 4ft Curves and Peco Points to encounter.

If you are talking 4ft radius rather than diameter it will manage to get round them. The front overhang will be considerable though. MTH's One Gauge model Mallets are articulated like the real thing with only the front power unit articulated. The long boiler is fixed to the rear unit frames.

I have one on order. You can pay monthly to some dealers. Mine is abut halfway paid off, so should be done by the time they come in. I have an older one that I repaired, still holding up okay, but who knows? It's my favorite to run, I plan to convert it to battery power so I can take it to other layouts.

Yes am talking 4ft Rad. However as it is a True Mallett unlike the LGB ones, I expect that there are lots of things it would hit. So just the Straightish run would work. Spose I will not bother, though it would make a great Shelf Queen!

If it would make it around the curves, then you could probably fix the clearance issues if you wanted.

I think it boils down to if you want it or not at that price, rather than the technical feasibility.

Nah I have just spent a long time Cementing Big Rocks in place to represent a Hilly Terrain as close as I can get. Also many other parts of my line are in Tight Places with little room for maneuver. Had I gone down the US Route when I started I would probably be using 1:20 Stock and the clearances would have been fine. Nice thought, but I have more than enough kit. Though having seen 3 Big Boys when in the States in 1994 I do love the beasts. May even pop over to see the one being worked on for running when finished. Now that will be awsome. A Big Boy going Up Sheerman again. Ah the stuff of dreams.

Just wanted to let you all know MTH is already pre sold out on item #70-3027-1 Road [HASHTAG]#4012[/HASHTAG]

We have limited room available. If your interested please place your preorder ASAP

It's certainly impressive and I'm looking forward to seeing one in the flesh, so to speak. But it fits neither my loading gauge nor my scenario, so I'll be giving it a miss. Ken makes enough money out of me in other ways!
