I can see this being a great display item for "Next Train from to" set up. Could have done with a few of these on the Ruschbahn when we were in full swing.

Information about the Train Destination Display is now available in English at the Massoth web-site:

Well found Tander, these are even better than I imagined. A couple May even work for my line.

The Train Destination Display has arrived here (Garden Rail Outlet)....

I just had to try one....

Only place on the Allegra set appears to be on the outside of the carriages..??
So,
What would it prototypically display? - Final destination? Next stop going to?

No point displaying the station arriving at.. Passengers already there should know what it is, and those on the train would be discouraged from leaning out to see the displays!! ;) ;)

Phil, I think on the real Allegra they toggle between the final destination and the next stop. The one at the front of the train remains constant, say "Bernina Express" or goods train etc.
Mark, thanks for creating this post--I've been curious about the programming. I looked through the decoder template in the Massoth software but it seems like the translator got tired and didn't finish his job. ::)
I'm curious about a few things:
a) can you make them toggle or scroll?
b) how would you program them once installed in an Allegra--is there a programming lock?
c) would you make it the same address as the Allegra then use the higher functions, or give it a separate address?

Keith

As I read it, you can make them scroll, and Mark's picture of the 'train' being displayed appears to have the first few pixels of the loco-front on the RHS of the display?? Mark, comment please?

I am unable to find a 'manual' for this on the Massoth website.. If fact can only find it referenced in the new product area.

I couldn't find a manual, either, Phil, which is why I started looking through the decoder template to see what the options were.
You might want to have a look to see what you can glean out of it. :)

Keith

The train is indeed scrolling and that's what it does when it is first powered.

The manual is 56 pages long and I have not digested any of it yet....just plugged it in to DCC track power....skimmed that its DCC address is initially the usual 3 and F7 & F8 scroll forward/backward through the destinations.

It does indeed have a programming lock - the standard Massoth CV 15 & 16.

In the German Massoth forum there is a thread showing how to install it in a Piko wagon. It doesn't provide much information about the programming except a little at the very end. I guess Mark can shed some more light on it when he has had the time to read the manual.

Yes, I saw these advertised somewhere, though I can't remember where. Having looked at the Massoth description, I can see how they would work if connected to a train carriage and triggered to show the station they were arriving at via a track sensor. However, if you placed one in a station, to announce where the next train was coming from or going to, how would it know which train was actually arriving? Assuming , of course that all the trains passing through a station weren't coming/going to the same places. I hope I have explained what I mean here.
ie if the first train was going to destination A and the next train was going to a different destination, how would the display IN A STATION, distinguish between them and display the correct information?
Because you would have a Station Master that would know what is happening and would drive the Chip Display.

Until we see the manual, we are guessing a bit as to what we can make them do.. We only have the marketing info from the Massoth site, and Mark's initial comments to go on.
That, and not really knowing how they are used prototypically on (say) the Allegra means we are in the dark (no pun) really. ;)

As I read it, they can mount either way up, so you could put two together to form a four line display, possibly??
In theory, you could make a 'next train arriving..' display. Need to wait and see..

Just looked at Rapid electronics and what are the possibilities of this being the same animal?

16 x 2 OLED Alphanumeric Displays 57-2292 £17.00. need to investigate more!

It doesn't matter what you use it for, how it works or whether you can even see it in the model - you just have to acknowledge that its the coolest DCC accessory you've ever seen . 8)

That is just the display, and a bit of intelligence..
You then need to factor building your own DCC decoder, and how to interface it to the display. :(

Hi all,

I see that the manual is now online. Let's just say it's "interesting". ::) :-X

Keith
I've browsed through the manual and it definitely looks like there is a lot to play with. It would be interesting to see a backfitting plan for the Allegra set (which would require 4 pair of these displays). With regards to the power hook up for all these displays, are there track power connections in both end cars in the Allegra set?

Please be aware of a wrong reference in chapter 5.6 which describes automatic operation with contacts, for the connection details you have to go to chapter 8.3 and not 6.3 as stated in the manual. With my poor soldering skills this option is unfortunately not feasible as the manual warns thay you should have extensive mechanical, electrical soldering skills to do this. The blobs of solder I usually leave behind when soldering anything doesn't bode well.
