Making some cargo wagons/cars from the ussr 1922 to 1935

I had a job where there was really a lot of waste 9-10mm thick plywood.
I cut them all in pieces of 81mm by 30,40 and 50cm pieces



Drilling the holes for the buffers and the couplers in the bottom plate.


Predrill the holes for the screws




Making a half wood connection inti the walls

to receive the head wall better for a better finish.

Cutting the walls to simulate the woodenplanks

It does not really matter how the grain is going, i think it will give a more "used" look at the end



Mark where the "steal beams" are coming.



Dont forget to sand before you mark with a pencil, first 100 grid and for finish 180 grid

This was my test wagon/car, before i went into production, it is not a completed one and with some mistakes:





Now what i am tring to make is some former soviet postal and cargo wagons:




I could post half the book here, but you will have a idea.
The small details per wagon and the time frame will be determent for what is witch(does not make any sens does it?)

All is made out of waste wood, zip/lock ties, waste paper, roofing nails and caliber 22 cases, only the boogies and the couplers will be 3d printed, sorry
For roofing i did as a experiment pvc sheet, glossy paper gives a better finish and is cheaper.

Brilliant use of spent bullets. How about fine grade wet and dry for your roofs?

It still needs a lot of work, i think i can complete just one car per week.
It make sense incl with some production work incl some standard pre production work, but the detailing is just costing a lot of time.

The dents in the paper, i made a small jig for it:


The blue plastic filler was only for the space, so all the wires that where soldeert where at the same depth on the table when soldered at the board.

The weight of a finished wagon is around 760 grams, to heavy?

You were wondering what to use as roofing material, wet and dry (glass paper?) has been used successfully

Another option is paper kitchen roll or workshop wipe up roll that does not have much of a ripple or design. You use PVA on the roof, place down the roll and paint on well thinned water and PVA on top. A small corner paper roller gets the stuff good and flat. You may need to do a join in the middle with one piece at each end and a piece in the middle. You do end up with an odd ripple but this appeals to my designed impurities view. Can’t imagine that Russian van roofs would be perfect after a few years outside. When dry you can gently file the edges with a mild file or sandpaper.

I have access to 1mm thick A3 size paper, i was thinking about that one, or very thin wood 2.5mm triplex wood and sand of the edges.
When the flat roof is complete, i want to cut it length wise in half and join it back together with a piece of tape, to create that hinging effect.
The center beam was 1cmx1cm, but it looks better when i cut off the end by 5mm to make it more thin.


The biggest worries i have with paper is our climate, the RH% is fairly high around the year, and you know the Netherlands, no cloud in the sky and than rain...
So i was also thinking about pvc sheet 1mm thick, 2mm thick works also oke.
When i look at the overhang of the roof, i think 2mm thick will be the best option.

I think if you use waterproof grade PVA you will have no issues. A shower or two if you leave them outside overlong is more likely to give you issues with delaminated ply.
