Personally its too tedious for me with my insatiable demand for instant gratification. However I have seen this demonstrated by a war gamer adding detail to a tank and the results were stunning. None the less its time consuming process but then is it any longer than drilling holes and inserting fake rivets? The trick to application is to lay the job out first using ruler and pencil then marking the pitch of the rivets with a pair of dividers along the lines. At the points marked you then place a drop of rivet..... If you are into serious riveting there are available rows of pre spaced self adhesive rivets, cant find a listing for them now when I need it though....
Let us know how you get on. I am currently drilling holes and inserting cut down pins in. Mixed results, its so hard to get proper lines and spacing even when marking out. Ideally I would like a self adhesive stick on peel off the backing. They all seem to be waterslide and I dont find that easy either.
The smallest size of 1mm seems a little large like those on Bachmann Bighauler tenders or Roundhouse Lady Anne smokeboxes. If they did a 0.5mm size it would be much more appealing.
Sorry to throw my tuppence into the mix here but I have recently had great results with scale plastic rivets from Titchy Train Group.
This process is slow and time consuming as Trev quite rightly points out, but the results are very much worth the effort. It does require some time to mark out and measure up the lines and positions, but at least you can guarantee an even an consistent size and shape which is very difficult to achieve with other methods. These rivets come in a number of different sizes and they are quite reasonably priced too.
If you want to have a look over at my GP18 kitbash thread on this forum you can see the results I was able to achieve.
Gareth lovely models both. I think its a lot do with skill and steady hand. Whatever gav was using would look good! I have to resign myself to impressionistic modelling, which I enjoy.
