LGB U Class Recon and Battery Conversion

OK if you don't like amateurs butchering LGB stuff look away now :rolf:

I have a clamshell gearbox u class that is very old and in a real mess. It didn't look weathered just tired and plasticy. It also had no skates (do any?) and was rubbish unless you mr muscled the track first and wanted to pull one wagon. it was also granuching from the gearbox.

First I took apart the motion to get the gearbox apart (which i realised was not needed later!) I cleaned things up and greased the gears sparingly with an appropriate grease. I then took the whole thing apart and scrubbed it in the hope this would help appearances.

I installed a 6 cell nimh 3000mah 7.2 tamiya battery and wired it so it would switch between 3.6v 6000mah and the full 7.2v but on 3000mah. I then gave it a forward back switch and left the charging socket hanging into the cab (can't see it with doors closed) I then fitted the swithces one using a handy hole already there.... mmmm more on that later!

It now runs SO much better than ever and sedately too and you can hand shunt it reasonably in crawl mode (3.6v) As well as the battery I filled the dome and behind the backplate with lead. It now pulls like a train...

The problems arose when the cleaning still left it looking a mess. I decided a waft of matt black is better and stuff the red lining and makers plates - I think I am glad about this. it is certainly more presentable from 4foot away +
The other problem is that when I was reassembling it the convienient prexisting switch hole was the mounting for that distincitve whistle assembly thingemy....!!!!! Drat so it all has to come apart again.
I keep thinking about getting some Cogges Railway trasfers maybe this is the time!

anyway here she is sans whislte and transfers:
