LGB Schoema x2 on eBay

My 4 year old son has decreed that we must get a diesel engine of some description - we've only got steam locos at the moment, you see.

I've found this on eBay: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/270800846707 which is an auction for a couple of LGB Schoema diesels, both fitted with digital decoders. I don't really need two locos, but the more the merrier :)

Are these decent locos, or should I steer clear? What's a reasonable price to pay for them?

They are very good locos indeed. I have one that I have converted to rc, but in original form was excellent. It's the same drive as the Stainz locomotive, so double heads well with them too. My first thought is that the price for those 2 is a little steep, but I guess being digital and one having sound it isn't too bad. If you're analogue they can be picked up a fair bit cheaper, when you can find them.

Buy both, strip out the decoders, sell those seperately, and then sell one of the Schoema's on... that's what I'd do! You'd be helping out yourself, and also others by making it available on it's own and hopefully it might subsidise whatever price you pay for the pair as well. The forum is a great place to pick things up from fellow G-scalers, and pass on stuff you don't want/need.

They're OK, provided you add a lot of weight (at least 500 grams and preferably 1 kilo). As delivered they simply don't have enough weight to provide decent traction. The price being asked is OK though not great. You can get basic Schoemas for £60, so it really depends on whether you need the decoder(s). By the way, don't bank on selling the decoders. These Schoemas come with the LGB factory install variety that - unlike 55020/21 - isn't a plug 'n' play item in other locos.

I only paid £60 for my boxed Schoma earlier in the year; a basic 'no frills' model missing a handrail but has been well looked after runs beautifully.

If these are factory-fit LGB decoders, then that probably works well for me and I'd definitely keep the decoders in situ - I've got a MTS II serial set-up, and they should work fine with that.

However, my last hour of Googling has failed to turn up any mention of a version of the loco with factory-fitted sound activated via the MTS remote's function keys (can only find a version with factory fit sound with a horn activated by a track magnet), so perhaps the sound equipped loco doesn't have a standard decoder.

I've asked the seller for more details :)

The only Shoema I can think of with a chip plus horn sound is the green one from the 55000 starter set issued in 1998/9. That had a 55020 chip installed which is not great (no back-EMF and the frequency used makes the motor sound noisier than a loco fitted with later chips). Shouldn't be that setup in one of those red Schoemas, but if it is, you'd really need to find someone willing to take the 55020. Me for instance! You'd then need a 55021 to retrofit and I know a man who has one spare (not me!).

I heard back from the seller eventually. The model number of these locos is 23600 - they're relatively recent.

I've not been able to find any mention of a 23600 loco with factory-fitted sound, so I'm assuming the sound must have been fitted separately. He's not given me any details of what the sound unit is yet though, unfortunately - he's just said he knows it's not a LGB 65002 euro diesel as he has one of those in another of his locos.

Unless he responds with details before the auction is up, I'm not sure I can take the risk of bidding on something that might not work with my set-up...
