G'day guys,
I know this is a bit of a long shot, but does anyone have a LGB RhB railcar (or other variants and colour schemes) they're looking to sell?

I've been investigating the feasibility of finding a second hand one, but they don't come up for sale that often. I've seen a few on German ebay, but they usually don't ship to Australia. Any condition is fine, not afraid of doing a bit of work to get it going.

You would be surprised, most German sellers use the Ebay default settings, but very often a polite message over the Ebay messaging service asking if they would ship to Australia (pointing out that you will pick up the postage cost and if possible use Paypal) and wonders may happen. Note that the Germans seem to prefer courrier services to the post for larger/heavier/valuable items so be prepared for a sharp intake of breath!

Usually that's what I do if they don't explicitly state they don't ship to some countries. Maybe I was just unlucky with the ones I've seen so far, I'll keep an eye out.

Haha, sharp intakes of breath, wondering how much one's soul and internal organs are worth and how long it would take to stave to death is standard practice for large scale in this part of the world. If shipping is less than 20% we consider ourselves lucky!

I have one here in NZ if you haven't got one yet. New and never run.
Cheers

Thanks everyone for your responses, most appreciated. It looks like there's a few potential options that are something close to what I can afford, I'll have a think.

I have some questions about VAT on European/UK listings though: Do prices include VAT by default? Is it just for new, or also second hand? I notice some second hand listings have VAT included, is the actual cost still 19% less for overseas buyers? It's certainly a significant difference at these sorts of prices!

A private person cannot sell without VAT. Business holders can but many don't know how to do this

A private sale by an individual doesn't have VAT on anyway - a seller only has to charge VAT if his business turnover is above the VAT registration threshold (currently something like £60,000).

So if you're buying a second-hand items from a private individual (such as a member of this forum), then there is no VAT element in the first place, so nothing to deduct. If a private seller wants £500 for something, then you'll pay £500.

If you buy from a VAT-registered dealer over here, then they should deduct the 20% UK VAT for you if it is being shipped to somewhere outside the EU. There is nothing difficult or complicated about this, they simply deduct the VAT and put the order down in their accounts as an export order going out of the EU. Should the VAT man ever query it during an inspection or audit, the dealer just has to be able to show from the paperwork that the order went to someone outside the EU.

Jon.

PS: just to be completely clear, the status of the item (new or second-hand) does not affect the VAT question; only the status of the SELLER, ie: whether he is a private individual (or a very small trader who stays under the VAT threshold) or is a VAT-registered business.

Thanks Jon, that is very helpful :) I had a feeling that last time I bought something from the EU I did have to pay VAT, but from what you said Henri it sounds like some business don't always remove it on overseas purchases.

Yesterday saw the yellow one for sale at Meijer & Blessing in Rotterdam for Euro 699,- if you registered at their address list, 5% discount.

Wife said NO...

Ah, Henri, as you are new to G scale you still have to learn the techniques of the "Stealth Purchase".... you time any mail orders carefully so that they arrive when the Missus is out of the house, or if you buy things in person then leave them in the car until the coast is clear, then carefully smuggle them in...... then when, some time later, she says "I haven't seen that before, is it new?" you can answer "oh no, dear, I've had that for ages...."
We all know that they (the wimminfolk) do it to us about clothes, shoes and handbags, so it's only fair really! ;):rofl::rofl:

Jon.

I have accepted an offer. Thanks again everyone who replied to this thread, this forum is great for seeing what options are available.

It is easier to get forgiveness, than permission, Henri!
;):lipssealed::lipssealed:

Haha that's my motto too. In this case forgiveness from my future self for when I have spent several month's budget all at once. :P
