LGB 2080S does not move

Hi there,

I just picked up an LGB 2080S. The lights turn on, the sound works, but it doesn't move. I took it apart to test the motor, and it works.

Can I test the engine without the body, just the wheels and the motor?

Sorry if my English isn't perfect.

Best regards.

Marc from France.

Accepting that he says there is no switch in the cab and that there are ‘switches’ in the smokebox this sends pangs of memory to my single brain cell of them smokebox ones. I would imagine that the link to breakdown is inaccurate as those switches he shows in post #3 picture are not shown for the 2080S. In the cutout to the right there are no wires leading to a cab switch. Hm confusing…..

I've found a leaflet with a reference to switches in the smokebox of the "2080S Electronic"!

Now, if the first paragraph on the third screenshot holds the answer, we just need to find someone who knows what an "NTC resistance" is (and where to get one from)!

What happens if you remove the 9volt battery? As that is only intended to kick in when there is no track power, it might help determine if the track power is getting somewhere (still some sound) or not (no sound).

Hoping something here moves the debate in the right direction

Cheers

NTC usually stand for Negative Temperature Coefficent. NTC devices have a resistance value which decreases as the temperature of the device increases.

IIRC LGB installed them in the motor circuit so that there would be a delay in the motor turning, so the sound and smoke got a chance to do their thing before the loco moved off. A piece of wire between the NTC device sockets would soon demonstrate if the loco can move under power.

So, a photo of the underside of the model is required..
It would appear that there may be either a faulty component plugged in, or no component at all?

The 'bent paperclip' school of engineering, should get the loco moving. - At the sacrifice of sound before motion.

The resistance was a small round green thingy that fitted into 2 small holes on the chassis just above the front and centre wheel one side. You can just make out the 2 small brass bits where the thingy pushes in.
