Thats a great railway!! Shame you have to modify it all, but I must ask why does the pond have to go because a Grandkid is arriving? it will be a few years before it's a problem and then an easily managed one, and think of the fun and wonder of exploration of a pond for a enquiring mind?..............................

wow,,,what a nice layout mate....so no time and no hear from u for a while,,,so what is that white cable tht is go under the tracks to the passager coaches?>.

yeh you could cover it VERY carefully and sturdily. sadly i have personal on this one. almost exactly a year ago a very good friend lost their 18 month old to a water feature in his granddads garden whilst breaking the journey from a holiday we went on together. The desperation was just awful.

I have just built a small frog pond with a concreted in heavy gauge mesh over (same age kids) and even that makes me think twice- but decided it's emotion not logic as it is extremely sturdy. You really can't be to careful and it's only 8 months till crawling. Water is one area you just cannot take the tiniest risk on- so I vote sensible granddad to be and a lovely railway too. (sorry to make this serious but important to me)

Interestingly you could also make a marsh. The idea is simple, a pond but only a few centimeters deep with pond liner, a drip feed hose arranged in a coil, a water pressure reducer and then fill with earth. Plant plants that like watery, boggy, claggy, yeah, well you get the idea. The advantage is the greenery and fauna will be similar to a pond but the greatest risk is muddy trousers. It also stays green throughout those long hot months of summer :rolf:
Hang on, see if I can find where I first saw this...

A friend of mine just put in a water garden for his RR. One end he has a large waterfall that falls off two tiers then empties into a shallow stream that goes a few yards. The the other end he has what is called a bog pump. It is at the bottom of the pond and filters the water up like a spring. The water is only a few inches deep and then runs into the larger stream where he has the water fall. Once covered with rock you cant tell the pump is their. Whats great about having shallow stream is you get a better effect with the noise of the water.

a trully great railway, is a well used one...

Hey Kim, Layout looks nice but remember, you can't get any less than my current tiny layout, I'm jealous. ;)

That is looking decidedly good - well done. It only takes a couple of inches so to err on the safe side is very wise. I fell through the ice in a pond when I was three or four - no adults and very scarey - my fault entirely. Luckily, I managed to get out OK (pretty obvious, otherwise I wouldn't be writing this!!) As you say, you can always put a water feature in later.

looks great Kimbrit and i totally agree less is more , at one point i was planning on going around the whole garden but SWMBO and the Shed with windows put pay to this.
Just so happens it was a blessing in descise i know have more time to work on keeping what i have running and slowly trying to detail it.

Hi John, yes, it is the right decision and the more stories I hear just reinforces that. Had some good ideas off the lads re water features but to be safe it's out for a year or three.
Cheers,
Kim

I too thought that, but then another comes along, and another, like a never ending stream.......what was that about water features? Pardon!

I still haven't got one, but I'll live without it, the 'compensations' really are worth it.

Cheers Vic, nice to hear fromyou mate. I quite agree about your rr, it keeps getting smaller from what I've seen. Didn't you clear some outside space up to venture outside a while ago?
Cheers,
Kim
I tried, but efforts were rejected by the Planning Authority, been focusing on downsizing the collection to a sustainable level for my tiny layout as I now have. No point holding onto larger size items like Big Haulers and the like when they havent even got a snowballs chance making it around the the new layout.

I've got the ideas
I've got the authorisation
I've got the space
I've got the kit
I've got time
I've got the materials
I haven't got the interest.
