A brief synopsis:

Loco:

Body - Bachmann Bug-Mauler (plastic wheels origins) with K27 switcher pilot and Accucraft headlamp
Chassis - scratchbuilt with Buhler 7-pole motor, ABC gear box, GRS L&B 2-6-2 cylinders and motion, Slater's driving wheels, LGB feldbahn wheels for pony trucks. The highlight of the conversion being that there is daylight under the boiler.
Tender: Bachmann K27 body on standard Bachmann big hauler tender chassis with USAT (I think) wheels.

Electrics:

Batteries: 19.2v sub-Cs rated at 3300 mAh (three packs 2 x 6v and 1 x 7,2v wired in series)
ESC: Peter Spoerer Electron
RC: Cheap Hong Kong 6 channel TX/Rx set

Hi, that sounds like a great chassis. I bet that it is powerful. The loco looks great as well.

If I may could I ask a few questions:

1. Did you scratchbuild the chassis yourself or did it come from a supplier?
2. Did you incorporate any equalisation or springing?
3. Is the wheel arrangement still a 4-6-0 or have you changed this to something else?
4. The cab appears to be a standard Big Hauler, but looks wider. I wonder how you achieved this as I can't see the join! And the roof looks original as well!

Tim, hi, your questions in order :wait::wait:

  1. Yes, I scratch built the chassis out of some steel flat (I couldn't get brass in the right size at the time) using Roundhouse spacers.
  2. Ah, no - and that is its Achilles' heel in terms of turning the power into traction :think::think:
  3. The wheel arrangement is 2-6-2. Some time after I built it, I realised that the 2-6-2 arrangement was not common in the USA :oops::oops:
  4. Yes, the cab has been widened out to suit my Fn3 stock >:)>:)

Many thanks Rhinochugger and apologies for not replying before as have been away. Very interested in how you widened the Big Hauler cab, as I need to do this myself.

I'll have a go.
