I'm fairly new to garden railway world, but having worked on the Isle of Man steam railway and and my grandfather being the chief engineer down there for some time, I'm quite excited.
It all started with the discovery of the Accucraft Peveril model, and I am saving (slowly) up for it, and the start of my garden railway.

I am currently landscaping my garden, and it seems like a great time to allow for a later addition of a railway circuit. I have been trying to find out some core dimensions and recommendations for laying out a 45mm gauge 15mm (corrected, thanks Philip) scale layout. I'm looking forward to building some aluminium bridges, and generally wanting to design the layout. But I'm having difficulty finding dimensions for track, like the dimensions for a set of points, the clearance that the train will need on the track, on bends, straights, and bridges. I am thinking about setting up a website about the creation of this railway, and documenting all the finds that I make. I just haven't got there yet.

I am planning to mainly run Isle of Man stock, where I can and keep it fairly manx to start with, but you never know, perhaps I'll branch out later... in the years to come.

So, any information anyone can give, or point me in the right direction of will be most appreciated.

Finally, I need to decide on a name for my railway! I'm based in Chislehurst, it will be as manx as I can make it... any suggestions? Perhaps something to do with a lost Manx railway route?

Well, I should finish now, and I look forward to seeing what you guys come up with.

Kind regards,

Bill Sands

Hi Bill and welcome to the forum.
To obtain the level of technical detail you require you may need to obtain a copy of the G Scale Society's ( http://www.g-scale-society.co.uk/ < Link To http://www.g-scale-society.co.uk ) technical manual.
A quick glance at their website doesn't seem to mention it but I've seen GSS committee and this forum member Mike ( http://www.gscalecentral.net/showprofile?memid=34 < Link To http://www.gscalecentral....wprofile?memid=34 ) selling copies at GSS meetings. I suggest you send him a P.M. via this forum.

Hello Bill and welcome. A number of forum members are based in IoM and model the IoM railway. One of them worked on the IoM Railway for many years, as did his father before him. I'm sure when they spot your post they will have plenty of suggestions for suitable Manx names. If they don't respond you may want to post a new thread with 'IoM' in the title so they will see it more easily.

Just one small point to note before you start making anything - commercially available IoM models are made to 15mm/ft to be correct on 45mm track.
