Isle of Man Trip

I'm off to the IoM on Monday (to Friday) - my first ever Shearings coach trip. I'm hoping/assuming there will be some free time for me to do other stuff than the three excursions - on the Manx Electric, IoMR, and Snaefell Mountain Railway. I am planning to visit the Groudle Glen Railway on the Weds evening. Any other recommendations/suggestions while I'm there?

Rik

Have fun. Bring back plenty of photos.

Rick - Don't worry its an "in joke" - If you ever see a photo that has me in it on the forum I will normally have one (or dependent on the occasion), two fingers extended towards the photographer............

You may see me referred to as "old one sugar" as apparently the one or two fingers denote how many sugars I want in my tea.

Which is strange................. As I don't drink tea, only coffee and don't take sugar.......... Go figure............. ::) ::) ::) ::)

Thanks Ian, it makes perfect sense now. There was only one one-finger gesture which I could think of ...... but I couldn't figure out the connection

Make sure to take the MER to Ramsey if possible; as my nom be plume suggests, the North of the Island is where it's at -though the Southsiders have all the railways these days >:( the railway museum in Port Erin has been re-worked and looks interesting -I haven't been yet.

If you go to Peel, the old station is worth a look from the outside -it is part of the 'House of Mannanan' museum.

Almost all the old IMR/MNR trackbeds are accessible as footpaths. Marine Drive, which runs South West from Douglas Head was a tramway pre-war -and is spectacular (but not easy to access unless you fancy a lo-o-ong walk...).

My advice is-stay in the coach, it never stops raining. As for the north of the island, I got a nasty chest infection in Jurby so I've put a curse on that area. On the brighter side, and there aren't many, I was dragged off the end of the platform while filming the IOM railway at Douglas and given a tour round the works. Very, very interesting. It was years ago, but it might be worth asking. The employees seem to have a real affection for the railway and seem to want to share it with like-minded people. While I am more into railways than trams, I did find the tram sheds of the Manx Elecric Railway quite exciting. Have a good holiday.

According to the itinerary, it looks as if I will have one day completely free - so I'll process these suggestions and see if I can work out something worthwhile. Is there a bus service to get me from Douglas to 'the other side'?

Rik

Apparently so. If you have a look on the gov.im website you can find timetables and some vey clear bus route maps. I don't know whether it would be worth your while, but there used to be a very cheap pass available covering all the Island's transport.

Have a fab time , I should like to go one day, a chap in the village pub often tells the tale of how it cost him £2 from Rotherham to Douglas (return), and how he lived on the famous kippers whilst there ::)

Cost me a little bit more than £2.00. I did try costing the trip for myself, but when I worked out the cost of taking the car on the ferry + petrol + cheap hotel + trips it worked out a heck of a lot more than the coach trip is costing which is all-in in a four star hotel on the seafront in Douglas. It was a no-brainer (I think that's the expression young-folk use 8) ).

Don't forget to look in on Track Shack at Groudle Glen. It could cost you though. :D

I'm hoping it will be open during the evening on Weds when I'm planning to visit the GGR

Coincidentally I'm just packing now - the first thing I've done is charged up the video camera batteries and the stills camera batteries. Somehow the clothes are immaterial (I think there's a pun in there somewhere).
