G’day!
My name is Tony, still working as an IT consultant for too many years, when I really wanted to be a freshwater biologist. My introduction to G scale trains was an LGB starter set back in 1993 when my daughter was 6 – except a few years later it was packed away and sent to my sister for her grand-children to operate.

Fast-forward to 2025 finds me with a renewed interest in large scale and the re-acquisition of my original Stainz loco & coaches. I’ve learnt a lot from this forum and enjoyed the humour (of “Heinz 57 varieties” from the UK, US, & AUS!) since the start of the year. So, I thought it best to come clean and say hello now.

My learnings from your contributions & advice on the forum are very much appreciated and are being put to good use. My sister convinced me to put together a ‘small’ mobile display for her church this year. Then I find it’s actually the “Sunshine Coast 2025 Model Train & Hobbies Expo”. The organiser has very generously given me the entire church stage (11m x 5m) and expects me to ‘fill’ it!

Needless to say, I’ve had to Super-Size the LGB starter set with EvilBay and GumTree content, although a very neat Alco in 1:29 may have snuck in as well - Done (tick). Then I had to plan a layout to fit around the bandstand and the drum kit. 7 iterations later – Done (tick). Now for a test run of the fiddle yard in the hallway – 3 sidings and a through road – Done (hence the current name of the railway – The Hallway Railroad {Hallway RR 1:22.5} - with apologies to Pugwash - tick). And finally, a land grab takeover of the carport to set out 50+m of track with 3 loops, a gandy-dancer circle, and a display trestle – Done (double-tick).

The show is being held this coming Saturday 6th September – wish me luck. And yes, photos & videos will be forthcoming in the ‘Large Scale Pictures’ area of the forum .

Best Regards from Oz,

PS: Milo, the 13yro Border-Collie, was no help at all in setting up LGB track.

PPS: I promise to faithfully abide by Rules 8 & 10 !

G'day Tony, welcome and I hope the show goes smoothly for you.
Look forward to seeing pictures of the show.
Do you have plans for a home setup?
Nice to see another border collie here too:)

Hi Stewie, thanx for the support!
To paraphrase Matthew 6:34... "Sufficient unto the exhibition day is the planning thereof" I haven't got a clue what I'll do afterwards, but the options are wide open!
And yes, Border Collies rule (according to Forum Rule #5)

You haven’t been paying proper attention, sir: Cats rule, as any cat appearing here will tell you.

Hi Tony welcome to the forum, good to see Miko a Doggo look alike if a bit darker in colour. I have a Romanian rescue dog staying with me till this weekend whilst owners on holiday.

Messrs. Paul & dunnyrail dunnyrail , thank you for the warm welcomes, Very happy to be a small contributor to the forum.

And to P Paul M ... Unfortunately, I appear to have also accumulated 140m of straight track, 300+ curves (R5 down to R1), and assorted points (R5 & R1) so maybe I should start right-of-way negotiations with Milo - it is her backyard at the moment!

Welcome to the Forum, Tony -it looks like you're going to have a lot of fun with that lot. A pity to put it all away afterwards, and you must be heading into Spring soon -the  best track-laying season, with a summer of testing, refining and running to follow...;)

Thank you Patrick for the encouragement!
I do admit to having some ideas for the backyard, but they have been sternly repressed until after this coming weekend :-O

Welcome to the forum Tony....

Hi Tony, welcome!
As someone who has 'done' a few temporary layouts like this:

Allow plenty of extra time to setup.

Be prepared for things to be in different places, and to have to re-design some / all your layout, on the day. - We had one show where an 'extra' stand had been added and we had less than half the area we were expecting.

It is OK to have 4-5 foot lengths of track, parallel to each other, with a loco and stock on each. - They don't have to be connected into the main layout.

You don't need to run at formula 1 speeds!

KISS (if you need to).. An oval with a passing loop or two, will do, if needs be. - See above about displaying stock.
With two loops, you can have two trains parked, and one circulating.. Pop one out / one in, to a loop, to ring the changes.

Have fun. Let selected punters have a go, if you can.
Smile, look at people! - Don't sit behind the layout, staring at a phone.. You would be surprised how many do!

But most of all, have fun and don't forget the photos! - A friend or partner is good for this, as you may be way too busy..

Enjoy!
PhilP.

Hello PhilP PhilP

I can see you’ve done this sort of thing before. Thank you muchly for your hints and tips!

Please be assured that I have done a fair amount of homework and reconnoitred the church stage features once I got over the shock of being “centre stage” so to speak.

And funnily enough I’m really looking forward to talking with people as they come past. I hope that the circulating trains (circulating at non-warp speed!) will prompt their memories and reminiscences. Listening to the stories of trains in their lives is a real opportunity to understand what they have been through. My Mum and Auntie Edith rode the NSW Great Northern Railway between Tenterfield and Sydney when they were WRANS during WW2. Then later in the 50s & 60s, Mum used to take the family (x5 children) on sleeper coaches to visit our grandparents in Tenterfield (approx. 16-17 hour trip behind a steam train).

So, back with the display! I’ve roped in my sister and her husband to help with setup and pull-down. The yard area is controlled by simple SPST switches that bridge isolating joiners on each track. This means I can run a train into its dedicated track and send out a new loco and consist without any fuss. All points are intended to be operated by Maradona’s “Hand of God” . Internally there are two loops running new BR80 Steam locomotives - one with freight, one with passengers. Plus, there is an assortment of buildings, people, cars, trees, etc. I’ll be sitting on a drafting high-chair beside the stage – prime position to chat with people.

I haven’t forgotten the kiddie-wink appeal. For the open gondolas I have a range of stuffed toys and figures so that children can spot them as the trains go round the main track. A bit of sleight-of-hand will be used to add/remove these as appropriate for the viewing audience! Inspiration was also given by kedwards kedwards when I saw he had adapted a mobile phone to ride the rails for his Thomas films. This caused a 2nd hand caboose to become a “Camera Car” which now means I can make YouTube videos travelling around the stage – hooray!

Lastly, I have backups. The local model train club here in Brisbane has offered to provide back up locomotives (including a battery-operated one). I have packed extra track above and beyond the layout design (another 10m). My brother-in-law has access to the church (being an elder) so my track setup is planned for Thursday with full train consist test running on Friday.

All aboard for Saturday!!

Greetings from a tiny speck in the middle of Europe, I'm pleased that you have been watching and learning from us already so you must already know about our staid humour.
In at the deep end so anything afterwards should be easy, by the way for the yard right of way try a bone backhander. :mask:
I will let you off the blatant plagiarism as long as you include Milo in all the pictures à la grizzmo grizzmo :wait:
Above all though enjoy yourself.
