Has anyone seen one of these in the flesh, or even a review of one?

Are they 1:20ish, 1:22ish or 1:29?

There is one on eBay:

and ShourtLine.com appears to have 12 in stock at 339USD:

If that is code 332 (thou') rail it is sitting on then you could use that to extrapolate the length and height of the model, as it is pretty much side on. Then just divide into the known length of the real vehicle and.........bob's your uncle you have the scale. Max.

Most all of their stuff has always been on the 1/24 side. I saw one at a show but at the time I didnt look too closely, but it certainly did look nice. I have wanted the single truck version for a while but could never justify it. I do know that HLW stuff is as dam near bulletproof as you can get in LS.

Yes HLW is 1:24. They make good stuff but I dont like the fact that for what you pay the windows are frosted. The bogie Birney is certainly cheaper than the LGB version (aka New Orleans cars) but for me it would mean surgery to swap the door sides over.. I like their "Interurban" and if I had a more diverse tramway one of those would be on my wish list despite the size difference....

Hartland have the dimensions listed here:

Despite the size difference (to 1:22.5) Birney cars are GENERALLY (but not always) lighter and smaller than a comparitive standard gauge tram of the era. The ones imported into Australia are certainly so. Both Melbourne and Adeladie Birney cars had cute little towers on the roof for the trolley poles... So you can probably pull off using one on a 1:22.5 setup. They were/are rather a nice car even by todays standards, great for us tram Gricers, easy to drive (even HRH Charles can drive one) and have good performance. Even the slatted wooden seats have a degree of ergonomic comfort....

I got one of the Hartland Pacific Electric Cars:-

some time ago. The scale was certainly nearer to the 1:29 range when comparing with all my other Trams (LGB and Bachman) at the time. I was converting it to be more of a match by making the Roof Higher but it was one of those projects that fell by the wayside.

Nice looking and pretty good runner though. Never had any problem pulling it to bits, as I recall was pretty much all screw construction. But maybe they have changed method of build now.

The Birney has only one powered truck.
Plenty of room for a decoder or even batteries and a receiver, but for batteries the floor is not very strong and I would suggest adding re-enforcement between the 2 trucks.

That poem, about the young man who moved in predestinate grooves, always makes me want to ask: who would want to ride on a tram/trolley/interurban that failed to run in its predestinate grooves?
