Hi,

I just thought you may like a quick 'heads up' on my newest wagon. As I type, it's not quite finished but will be within the next few days. There is enough on the site finished so far for you to get an idea of how it's going to finish up looking.

Thanks,
Rob.

Hi folks
My gunpowder van arrived just before lunch and was made and primed in less than an hour. And some of that time was spent puzzing over it before reading Rob's excellent instructions:D
It has superb detailing as usual and looks just like the prototype which I saw a couple of weeks ago.
Photo attached in the 'Poundland' primer. I had better let it dry properly before weathering etc.
Cheers

For those who haven't been to Llanberis Slate Museum, here is a snap of the original in the rain.

I was contemplating a scratch build of the original one that I photographed in detail at Ffestiniog's Llechwedd slate mine a few weeks ago - but hardly worth the effort now that we have the nice little kit. The one at Llechwedd is very similar and is painted red, though I have no idea if they were that colour when in service. As for the Poundland primer, I use that for almost everything. Often blown over by one of the rattle can colours from Wilkinsons which are considerably cheaper than Halfords or Plasticoat offerings. Just wish they also did a lighter grey colour.

Well here is my attempt at some light weathering!

It is certainly a great model - and it has been confirmed to me by the experts in another place that it is definitely Ffestiniog. The prototype was used at the Oakeley quarry. And I will check out those Wilkinsons paints Roy. I use their water based matt black as one of my mixing colours for painting figures and people.

With items like this, 16mm seems very attractive if it wasn't for all the 45mm stuff I've got.

16mm is just the scale (1:19) - this van and all of Swift Sixteen ones are for 32mm (as mine) or 45mm track. On 45mm track the wheels are just closer to the axle boxes.

My concern is with the differences in scale. All my locos and rolling stock are Playmobil, so 1:22.5 to 1:24 so the height of a goods van is about 140mm and the loco a few mm more, so quite a bit bigger than the gunpowder van. Maybe I need a separate line and loco!

I know what you mean - and I would certainly not discourage you from justifying a new line and loco:D

However, slate and quarry railway stock is very small and looked it even behind the small quarry locos. The gunpowder wagon is not like a large box van - it is just a steel box on a slate wagon chassis. Full of character though:)

I have just photographed my train of Swift sixteen small stock with a Locobox Sophie (130mm high) and a Roundhouse Bertie (140mm high).
It works for me :)
