Ok Guys,

The vexed question of the Shed.

It goes without saying that every bloke ought to have a shed, however how much does it add to your enjoyment of the hobby ?

I've started this poll because the cheap shed I bought some years ago is an eyesore, and now the railway is up for rebuilding its going. I could buy a well made shed from a local firm, or use the footprint for more railway and the cash for a new loco...... but first I'd like to hear how other people get on.

Thanks

D

Yes I have a shed, no I couldn't do without it, and no I don't keep it, or use, it for railway purposes, apart from perhaps storing the odd bag of coal. Garden paraphernalia has to go somewhere.

The workshop? Now that's a completely different kettle of fish.

Mine's the old cow shed - built a shed for the garden stuff.

I have a shed but don't use it for storing railway stuff (would be a security risk). I store rolling in a lean-to porch but the locos are stored inside - partly for security and partly to avoid damp. I have a workshop on one side of the conservatory - and a very understanding missus as sometimes the whole conservatory becomes the workshop (modellers' third law - carp expands to fill the space allotted to it)

I have a shed in the garden but not for the garden ;D All manner of railway related fun gets carried out in there in the summer months. I retreat to the loft in the winter. Aint life grand ;D ;D ;D

Parkinson's law applies - the rolling stock fleet expands to fill the shed available. Now on my second shed....

I have 2 (greedy, i hear you say). The first is 3.6m x 2.4m and is for the garden stuff and pond filter. The second is 6m x 3m and for the railway stuff, its double alarmed (one in the shed and connected to the house alarm). Also have a dehumidifier for the electronics, PC with internet for decoder programming. Would spend more time down there if allowed!!!.....

My shed is as secure as I can make it, no windows , 2 locks doorway visible from the house and alarm . Still the live steamers live in the house. I would like a bigger one or my father in law to take his lathe , grinding wheels and other assorted tranclements out of it :-\

I built my own shed, having looked at all the things made out of matchwood.
14'6" by 13'0" (to fit the available corner in the garden, all 25mm T & G on 100mm by 50mm framing, floor on 150mm by 50 mm joists at 300mm centres, etc.
Cost LESS than buying one
And its as secure as its possible to make it, with alarms etc etc. I'm considering wiring the door handles to the mains, but I'm told that illegal!!!#

:o wouldnt be with out my shead, buy the very best you can aford, and it will pay dividant.. but.. dave you have a massive brick workshop.. lose the old shead, use the workshop

Thanks to everyone who has voted so far. It dawned in me after I had set the poll up that it could be unfair to ask people where they kept their stock - albeit indirectly.

Mike is quite right in that I do have a workshop on the other side of the house. I sort of got fed up carrying stock back and forth hence the first shed, but it didn't work out as well as I expected. The poll is to help me decide whether to build a decent trolley to cart the trains back & forth or build a better shed. SWMBO has ruled out the option of punching a hole in the side of the building and running another 90 foot of track round the garden.

[attachimg=2]To move my stock around I have an three tier tea-trolley. Each level allows three tracks, which are just a strip of 6mm ply glued down.
It currently has the problem that it has become a little to small, but there is the option of adding another layer or extending it in either direction, length or width.

Hope the pic works.

Took advantage of a 30" disparity of height of garden to floor in house. knocked hole in wall, inserted car-flap, now have indoor steam-up/set-up area.
All locos, stock and electrical equipment kept indoors. Locos in cabinets. Garden shed ? Yep, but a nice tidy compact lean-to type for all the gardening kit.

I clicked on the link and it opened up in Picture-it! I also use that for resizing my pics.

And ditto .....

Cant do multiple votes as I have a shed to run trains in, operate in, watch tv in, surf the net in and it also has a beer fridge, just need a Microwave and I can move in!!!!

D,
I have never seen a Shed that is beyond redemption. Pull it apart, raise it on a wall of 1 Breeze Block. Then strengthen the uprights, make a new roof and Tile It. Insulate the inside, put down a floor with Expanded Polystyreen Sheet then Chipboard T+G Flooring on top. Will be nice and cosy. Oh insulate the inside and replace any bad planks and framing too.

Look at mine in the earlier posts of my new build Railway thread.
