G Gauge eBay torrent

British narrow gauge (esp. Southwold and W&LLR)
Country flag
Has anyone else noticed that the G Gauge section of eBay currently seems flooded with items? Normally there are around around 16 pages of 50 items = 800 items. Sometimes this rises to 20 pages = 1000 items. When I checked the G Gauge section today there are 62 pages (ie 3100 items). Not sure though that this is the bonanza that it at first seems as there seem to be a lot of Piko items from one trader.

I've not checked eBay for a few weeks - have I missed something?

Rik

The reason is that ebay have now included about 50 pages from USA, the postage on which is more than the total cost of the item in the UK. I have to now select UK only which brings it down to about 12 pages. A bit non productive on ebays part but I cannot be fussed to sort through pages of useless stuff.

Yes - I just noticed that most of the items seem to be from the USA. How do you filter out overseas items?

Well, my standard search parameters are currently returning about 943 items, and that's including HOe/009 as well as G. This is basically based on filtering ebay.co.uk's "Trains and Railway Models" category for the two previously mentioned gauges. I thinkalso I've got the "Items available to the UK" filter on. This way I do see stuff listed from Ireland, Germany, China and a few bits from the US but not hoards of stuff.

If I want to do a global search I just open a second browser tab and clear the filters.

Hi,
Just to let you know i have today placed 2 items on piko g scale section / Br80 BR218 aristocraft section also have placed a few items on last couple week as building a austrian layout in workshop for winter use and also want to purchase silverlinge coachs and new loco, so need to raise some cash and can assure that iam not a trader but ebay have introduced alot of american items on aristocraft section thought at 1st i had problems with my settings but just click on uk only to reduce items bit of a pain not sure how to over come this any body any ideas lol.

It sounds as if you have this as your default search - I've not found out how to do that. Whenever I want to filter anything I have to set it up each time through the advanced search option. Is there a way of setting up favourite or default searches on eBay? An idiot's guide would be much appreciated.

AN Idiot

Set up your search with whatever parameters you want, including 200 items per page etc. and then where it says at the top "708 results found for blah blah blah" click on the save search to the right of it.

That'll add the search into your account so you can run it again when you next visit. It'll be under saved searches in the drop down of My Ebay.

Just wondering whether our new member kev peel of Castleford West yorkshire who is not a trader might be related to ebay user peelyk of Castleford West Yorkshire?

WHY? I think he just buys a lot and sells a little:rolf::rolf::rolf: But is this any of our business? I don't think so.

With regards to all the "unwanted" stuff I just click from UK only if ebay have intruded on my preferences. Its all about money, and if ebay and their sellers didn't make money there'd be no bargains (or chance of!) for me or anybody else.

Thank you Hamish. That is exactly what I thought when bidding for them.

But when they arrived, they weren't Bachmann reefers. Metal wheels had been swapped out for plastic ones.

Bachmann have confirmed in public (Ask Bachmann forum) that Bachmann billboard reefers have never been made with plastic wheels.

These reefers do not comply with the manufacturer's specification. Vendor denied that there was any problem, failed to make an unconditional offer to refund and continues to claim (Seller's Comment on negative feedback) that these were Bachmann reefers.

eBay CS failed to resolve, I won't be using eBay again.

Caveat emptor!

If I am about to become a customer - then yes, it is very much my business. A regular trader is hiding something if he pretends to be a private seller (could just be from the Revenue)

For those of you of a naturally cynical nature you might wish to look at my profile on Ebay - maxi-model, like my handle here. You will see I have a similar number of feedbacks registered (around 2/3rds of actual sales).
Now, the way I afford this wonderful hobby is to slowly trade out my old collection of model race cars and associated accessories. They are both static and slot-cars, die-cast and hand-built. They were aquired over a period of 20 years. You need to knock out a few slot cars to get that live steamer that is your heart's desire.
I am not a trader in any way shape or form as far as Ebay goes. And yes, despite my best efforts to be accurate in my descriptions, I pick up the odd negative feedback once in a while. It's usually a miscomunication/lost bin translation thing.
Please don't be so quick to pillory people.
P.S. You can also check my old occupation (for 5 years, up to 7 years ago) at http://www.slotforum.com/UK-trip-2003/maxi-models.htm where you will see my own range of models, which I never traded on Ebay.
Max.

I agree that if you are a potential customer then it is your business - but I wouldn't have thought that this forum was the place unless you had been the victim of a misrepresentation. I just thought it iseemed a little unfair thats all. BUT, if there is a genuine need to expose somebody so be it. It seemed that the implication was that maybe the statement "..I am not a trader .." was being questioned. And I'm a cynic by nature:rolf::rolf::rolf:

Getting back to the original question about an increase in items for sale on E-Bay. The huge increase is due to the iflux of stuff from the USA. scotty1954 has 98!
I had my E-Bay set up for UK vendors only, for the purpose mentioned earlier, postage costs from the USA. But now I have to plow through this Plonkers stuff. Not a happy camper am I over it!

Err. I 'm not volunteering to get in the middle of this, but... I can assure everyone, entirely from personal experience with stock that I bought new and some of which I still own, that bachmann's specs/tolerances are somewhat 'variable'. I didn't buy any decorated reefers, but I did buy stock, tank and hopper cars, and in one shipment from a major retailer, received a mix of metal and plastic wheels attached to otherwise identical cars in still sealed identical boxes stamped with the same catalogue numbers. ie: 6 D&RGW black stock cars, 2 with plastic wheels and 4 with metal ones. So I wouldn't be totally surprised if similar things had slipped through the net with other cars too, whatever the catalogue says one should expect.

J.
