Forum Advertising - Who Selects/Filters?

Just curious who decides what advertisements appear in the banner across the top of Forum pages.

The batch I've seen today included adverts in German for hotels, and an invitation to call "Anna from the Ukraine" who's apparently keen to get in touch with me ....

Appreciate the ads won't be just garden railway related, but I'd like to know how they are chosen. Do we we all see the same set of ads or they are "tailored" to each user? If the latter, where is the ad selection process getting its info from to do the tailoring?

Damn! I'd hoped to keep it quiet! :sweating::sweating::sweating::sweating::sweating:

(and clearly the poor girl either has poor eyesight or is a glutton for punishment - I appparently bear more than a passing resemblance to Shrek according to some of my family)

Thanks. Interesting read - I'd always wondered where the term came from. I'll also keep a closer eye on the adverts to see if they correlate with my (known) browsing history.

Big Brother and 1984!

There is a £10 charge to select the advert "free" option.

Alarmingly my current advert says "Choose for Life, Suicide. Don't hide it."

Good job I didn't fork out the £10.

I find that some do follow my browsing, whilst others are just Irish business's touting for trade!

There has been a previous disscussion on this, the reason this Forum is FREE, is that by posting ads, and getting "clicks" helps to generate revenue, the use of an "Ad Blocker" is generally frowned upon, hence the £10.00 option!

I just hate (!!) the adverts on internet to keep things 'FREE'. I NEVER click on advertising banners because:
  • most of the time you end up on very 'fishy' sites,
  • the advert is just not appealing to me or
  • I have already bought the item and the stupid cookie thinks I'm still interested.
And of course nothing is for free (ok, most then), I don't have a problem paying 10 pounds to keep this fantastic forum up & running.

Long live the ad blockers. People should rethink their business model when they rely on adwords.

Sorry I've unintentionally resurrected an old topic - I also hadn't realised there's a £10 Advert Free option. Much as I'll miss the Ukrainian invitations, where do I sign up?

To add: I have started a forum many moons ago about 3 Inch model cars (Matchbox, Majorette, Corgi, HotWheels, you name it). When I still ran my model car business, I sponsored the costs of hosting. When I stopped my business (sold it), the members of the forum ran annual 'auctions' of items. Anyone could offer items and these were listed and all members could bid on the item. On day x the highest bidder got the item and the money was handed over to me to cover hosting costs. That was really nice of them.

Then the hoster stopped charging money as I got many customers for them (do webdesign and such) so in return for the new customers the forum was hosted for free.

I never added adwords to generate money. Yuk.

"People should rethink their business model when they rely on adwords."

There's a huge underlying assumption in here that people think in the first place... ;););)

Click on your user icon (top left - similar to your avatar) and then click "Account Upgrades".

The adverts don't worry me as I don't even notice them. When I do glance at them they are invariably for for things I have just bought or holidays at places I have just been to.
