Yes, remove the existing analogue circuit board, keep the screws, and use them to mount the PIKO #36122 decoder. A wiring diagram should be included with the decoder, but I took a picture of it for you: http://45mm.nl/images/2015/2015070801-l.jpg

I think the output stage of the decoder has blown..

Visual inspection of the decoder may well show discoloured, or 'holed'/burnt-out components, sorry it does sound terminal for that decoder.

The first chip is en-route back to the retailer (who was very good about the whole thing) and it looks like this one is going the same way, I wonder if he's had a duff batch from Piko ?

If so you may wish to purchase a Uhlenbrock 77500 Decoder. Piko decoders are rebranded Uhlenbrocks and are the same except if purchased in a Piko box you'll get any required wiring with Piko connections. I suspect doing this will greatly reduce the possibility of getting one from the same duff batch.

Nope, the #36112 decoder comes from Massoth.
Thanks for the correction and please accept my apologies for a misleading post.

I have successfully used Uhlenbrock instructions to work out connections for a Piko decoder, when Itareus wondered if his previous chip for a different (i.e. not railbus) loco was from the same batch I incorrectly assumed it was the same as that from this different loco.

No problem. PIKO's documentation on their decoders hasn't always been up to date, so there's some incorrect information out there unfortunately. Leaves a lot of people (including me) confused at times.

Chris, just wondering: what locomotive was the other one, and which decoder did you use for that?

Have to say when I looked and checked Chris wiring the decoder did look suspiciously like a Massoth. But these things can all look the same if they are Screw Fit. I just looked at the Wiring Diagram and Decoder and all was correctly done according to that Diagram. Wonder if that is correct in the first place. Next time I go to see Chris must remember to use a Massoth set of Instructions to check out the wiring. As I remember them the wiring is not Track Motor but Track Motor(2wires) Track ...or ...Motor Track ( 2 Wires) Motor. With sundry other connections between. The Piko Dia as I remember it was nothing like this. Happy to be proved wrong if I am.
