First Scratch Build

Hi there

I am completely new to this wonderful hobby and have no idea where to start.  I loved the idea of having a garden railway after watching the garden railway series with Mark Found when I was a teenager.  I have since bought a house and my wife has given me permission to start a garden railway.  So I decided to subscribed to garden railway magazine and join this forum.  I cam across a couple of model ideas and decided to give something a ago.  The 2 biggest ideas have come from Ian Sharples and Ray Dunakin.  They are both phenomenal model makers.  Check them out below

The project below is for my main station area.

I bought a brass rod thing from B & Q to create the brick effect.

I then cut out the doors and windows and started marking the bricks etc.

After cutting everything out I glued the sides together

Then started to add the tiles to the roof and also put a chimney in

It is now ready for a few more touch ups and the paint job.  I also added led flashing which was an old tooth paste tube cut up and glued.

I will upload more picture once I have sorted a few other bits out and start painting.  I have nothing on the 2 guys above and probably should have chosen a slightly simpler project but if I can help you with anything please let me know.

Excellent! You've set the benchmark high right from the start!

Welcome to the forum!

Using a brass U rod for the brick detailing is a great idea!! Thumbs up!

Whereabouts in Wales are you based?

Excellent! Must have taken you ages!

Thanks. I live in Pontypridd..... Tom Jones country!

Nice work....

Congratulations! As your first scratch-build, this is an excellent start. Looking forward to seeing what develops.

That's some very nice modeling. May I ask what country you reside in, I don't recognize your flag?

Just down the road from me
Welcome
Put me out of my ignorance - how do you use the brass rod for brick detailing?

Diolch yn fawr! Where are you based Owlpool? Pontypool is it?

I used a set square to scribe a nice straight line, then I would use the left side of the rod in the indent and push down hard on the right side creating the second line. Once I created the original line with the set square it was pretty easy from there on in as each new line became the new guide if that makes sense? I then used a flat head screwdriver to create the vertical line.

It's a damn fine start :) what stock are you intending running?

Not too sure yet Paul. I bought the classic LGB starter pack, back in October and I have been adding track mainly to my collection. Once I have enough to complete it I will then think of some stock. What do you recommend?

Most of us would be proud of that after many attempts, let alone as a first effort - blindingly good! At this rate, you'll be giving Mike a run for his money.... ;)

Welcome to the forum!

Jon.

Started the paint job over the last couple of days......

I used a spray paint for the base coat.  I gave it two coats.  I decided to spray it all to give it even more protection for the outdoors.
1st Coat Take 2.jpg

I then painted the bricks.  I tried using the stamp suggestion from Ray Dunakin he used for his brick work but I found it did not work well at all for me.  So I must be doing something wrong.  I then just used a sponge cut down and dabbed it on with very little paint in order to not go into the gaps.  Once I switched to the little paint brush to get into the smaller gaps I found if I had very little paint and brushed it on quickly the paint would not go into the gaps.  So I decided to take a chance and use a decorators brush and it worked excellently (at least I think)

I am going to insert the painted windows and doors tomorrow and start painting some more details like the window sills and bigger bricks on the edge.

Thanks again for every ones encouragement and feedback.  It really is appreciated.

Have followed this thread from the start - nice job (and very effective brickwork). Good idea using the brass channel for parallel lines!

I guess you are using foamboard (plastic variety) and something like plasticard for the quoins (corner stones)? What glue did you use. Did you purchase the material online? Exceedingly difficult to get some of these materials over here.

Sorry for the questions - I've used the card foamboard but not the plastic variety.

Repeating myself - brilliant!!! Q? Do you make your own windows and doors? Or buy them in?

Ye it is all made up from UPVC plastic board. I got it from http://www.signforce.co.uk/Signforce/Forex_Classic.html It is the stuff they use on outdoor signs and I have been assured it is good to use outdoors.

The main structure is made out of 6mm board. The roof and window sills etc is made out of 3 mm board and the roof tiles and corner stones are all made out of 1mm board! Then the join on the top of the roof is a 10mm plastic pipe cut in half.

The glue I used is Evo Stik outdoor plastic glue... http://www.toolstation.com/shop/p58347?utm_source=googleshopping&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=googleshoppingfeed&mkwid=0HBUko2B&pcrid=46334903183&gclid=CIiv74iggsQCFRHHtAodLykA9w

No problem with the questions... Without sounding cheesy, this forum has helped me no end with hints tips and ideas so it is the least I can do!
