Finally A Nice Day

Shawn

Hiking, cross country skiing, snowshoeing
Had some early morning showers but by noon the clouds broke and the sun came out. The crew decided to take the HLW mini stock out on the main line. Logging season will be starting up as soon as the mud dries. The crew also managed to finish the logging spur exention as well as completed the finishing touch on the new bunks. They are hoping to get them out of the shop and in the camp tomorrow. Forcast are calling for a nice day.

Great photos. The clear window glass looks good on that loco.

Shawn - absolutely stunning - a Bachmann Davenport would look lovely on your line? Have you got one?
What's the ballast material? - it's exactly the finish I want to go for on my line.

I suspect those are what the Americans refer to as "crusher fines", James. More difficult to source over here, everyone seems to have a different name for it - but the best I've found is fine limestone chippings, which are pretty small at around 5mm average (3 - 8mm actual) stone size, they are a nice grey in colour and are sharp stones that bind together well - the type I used is bagged by a company called Hanson, I buy them from Kent Blaxhill (who may be a local chain to this area, but I'm sure that builders' merchants/garden centres around your way would have the same).

Thanks James. The Davenport is next on my list. I have been wanting to get it for sometime now. Hopefully this summer.

The balast is crusher fines also called stone dust and 1/4 fines. If you cant find it try mixing some sort of sand to the smallest rock you can find. The stone dust I use is limestone.

Thanks guys, I need to buy some in the next fortnight so will check a few websites at lunchtime - and Shawn - you won't be dissappointed with the Davenport. My 'Euro' version runs very smoothly, is nicely detailed and if you don't mind adding a few extras, really details up nicely (I did some handrails, hood door handles and rear windscreen wipers).

Just as an aside. Why don't you go and visit a limestone quarry? I am certain it would be cheap if anything at all for a couple of bags of aggregate.

There's also Granno - 6mm to dust - used to make concrete and screeded surfaces hard wearing. The colour is dark though.
