I have received a couple of second chance offers from Ebay, which expire on Monday.

Been watching four items, three ended tonight, and I bid on two and lost, so I let the third go, the fourth ends over the weekend, all from the same UK seller.

Now as I say the two I bid on have resulted in second chance offers, were won by the same person. I may be cynical, but I suspect that the seller has bumped the price up and in effect won their own items.

I may be totally wrong, have bought the same sort of items from this seller prior, without any problems, and they have over 5,000 items sold, a 1,000 in the last year, and only one negative feedback, no neutrals.

But these items are very niche market, (not G BTW.) model railway items, only ever found them on Ebay Germany, and only on the swap meet/collectors market circuit, once in over a decade in the UK, and that was by pure chance.

Could be a con, but could I be wrong?

Gordon, I would look at it this way..
You bid, and lost, but due to the alignment of the planets, have a second chance.
Answer these three questions:
1. Do you still want the items?
2. Are you happy with the price asked?
3. can you live with the 'niggle' you might have been on the receiving end of a little 'sharp practice'?

Depending on how much '1' applies, may influence how much of '3' you can stand!

Are the 'offers' at the amount the underbidder (you) was prepared to pay - your last bids - ? I have had one or two like that in the past and felt gazumped!
 
Over the years I have made a couple of 'second chance' purchases on ebay. I have never paid more than my original maximum bid that I have been comfortable with and I have been happy to get the items for that price. As Phil says, do you really want the item and are you happy with the price. If that is the case, why cut off your nose to spite your face, if the item is as rare as you say.

I did have a guy come back to me after I had won an item and offer me a second one at the same price.

I agree with Phil. #3 is a suspicion, you have no proof, so there is nothing you can do about it. If it was me and I had been looking for this item for 10 years I would snap it up. I look at it this way. We are lucky there is an active second hand market so we can get things we want that are no longer in production, and we can sell items we don't want easily and get a reasonable price.
 
I have had quite a few 'second chance offers' over the years and it was always caused by someone getting into a shark feeding frenzy state of bidding, then realising they had overbid, didn't want the item after all or simply couldn't pay. On all these occasions the seller contacted me and asked if I would take the item at my final offer, which I found to be fair. Never any niggles or dodgy goings-on by the seller.
In Gordon's case this sounds to me that the same thing has happened.
 
Yep, I've had 2nd chance offers and also offers for another of the same item. As folk have said, if you originally bid the maximum you were prepared to pay anyway, then no problem - you get the item you wanted. That's the way I play eBay these days; a single bid and then quit watching. If I get it for a lot less than my maximum then that's a win. If I miss out then never mind, there'll be another one along in the future. Never ever get into a last minute bidding war.

How does the seller do that ? I'm not sure I ever saw someone increasing the price of an item during bidding.

I am in a bit of a fit with a buyer at the moment. I sold him some O gauge track that he doesn't like the looks of. There is nothing damaged about it, but he wants to return it at my expense. If it hadn't been for his attitude, right from the "get go", I would have accommodated him. Unfortunately for me, Evilbay has ruled against me and I must accept the return. Now for the rub. He wants me to send him a return label. I have never had anyone ask for one, mostly because I have never had anyone return something to me. Twice, items were badly damaged upon receipt and both times I refunded their money and they didn't have to return the item. This guy refuses to send proof of damaged goods. I'm pissed, but will do as Ebay says. I suspect the buyer is still waiting for his label, which is not going to happen as I have given him the return address several times. There are a few very unreasonable people out there still.

He gets a mate to bid on the item for him.
 
Just been outbid on the last item on the list, and it ends soon, so let see if I get an offer on this one as well.
 
If it seems odd - just walk away.
 
You will never guess, I have just received another, second chance offer.

So I think big steps away from this seller are called for, pity, as past dealings were all above board in my opinion.
 
I have sold on a second chance offer - a car, and the wining bidder was a tyre-kicker, so offered it to the next lowest at his bid price, and sold

Where evilbay accepts the buyer's complaint, the cost of return postage usually lies with the buyer. I returned a boat cover that did not keep out the rain. The seller claimed that he did not received the goods, but as soon as I produced the receipt of posting I was refunded, but not my postage costs.
 
Just to draw this to a conclusion.

The two second chance and the other offer items are back up for sale, and by some strange coincidence so is the item I let go, but was won be someone else.
As is the item that I watched and had other apparent bids on it as well.
