DIY wooden fairy fencing

British narrow gauge (esp. Southwold and W&LLR)
Country flag
Not sure if anyone has spotted this but it seems to be incredibly good value @ 4 quid for just under a metre (or £8 for just under 3 metres - in buy 2 get one free offer).

It seems to be made from coffee stirrer wooden palings held together with twisted plastic coated wire, so not sure how long it will last if left outside continuously but, for that price I'm prepared to give it a try. The beauty of it for me is that it's not only flexible in the horizontal plane, it can be sculpted to follow the terrain in the vertical plane.

I've just deployed my first couple of lengths

Rik,
Is that 'as bought', or have you painted it?

As a PS:
Have you seen the Southwold drawings book, which is now available?

If you follow the link, Phil, it's available in a choice of eight colours - I assume that Rik's example is the "Coffee" colour option?

Good spot, Rik, looks useful and at a very good price. Presumably mass-produced in China, looks like quite a few different sellers on evilBay are offering the same stuff.

Jon.

Hi both
Yes pre-coloured - in this case coffee colour. I didn't fancy pink!!

Phil
Yes, I've bought a copy of the SR drawings book. Really great with fold out pages beautifully drawn in 16mm scale

The guy that did the John Ridgeway is a very good pal of mine from my days in Luton with the Ridgmont group of 16mm society. My gripe is that the scale is 16mm to the foot whereas it should really be 15mm to the foot as the SLR was a 3ft line. But I expect the largest buying group are likely to be 16millers. I will though be getting a copy in order to help support the SLR replacement railway build.

My thoughts too, Jon. All my SR models are built to 15mm scale, so it would have been good to have had the drawings reproduced in that scale. If I was still at work, I could have got them reduced on one of the fancy photocopiers - the drawings are too large to fit on my own scanner.

Aha think I will have a quiet word with John.

Thanks for that. Just ordered some to replace the Pola fencing which never survives the winter. If it only lasts a couple of years it will be an improvement.

That would be good. Not sure I can afford another copy in 15mm scale, I'll just work out the reduction formula for all the dimensions - a bit of a pain but liveable with.

I'm sure we're not the only ones who would prefer a 15mm/ft version - so could be a good marketing ploy for the Trust to produce two versions. I'm sure it wouldn't take much to change the scaling for a reprint.
