Dismantling a Sumpter mallet 20892

Hi
Being flushed with success at installing 2 Massoth decoders in to two engines and sorting out the programming and lights on a third, I thought I would tackle fitting a decoder into my Sumpter 215 ( LGB 20892) .
Having got it on its back and removed the front and rear bogies, I seem to be faced with a lot of screws through the floor.
My question is, can anyone point me in the right direction as to which screws I need to remove to get the body off so that I can fit the decoder?
Thanks in advance
Dave

You will find the service manual for that loco on this link, I had to use it when I pulled one apart to batterifiy one for a friend. Sadly I do not remember where the screws were nor can I get to the loco as it is in Norfolk somewhere and Dave has now sadly died.

Thanks for the link Jon, it's strange, whenever I try to find info on the site, I can never seem to find what I want but if I Google it, as I did later, after I had posted, it takes me straight to a post on this site?!? ..........must be me! However, I did also find the good description by 'Kim' on how to take it apart, so with both bits of info , it should be no problem.
Thanks again
Dave

Yep, this site receives quite a few hits, so when, for example, I Google for US outline Fn3 rolling stock, I often get pictures of my own trains :confused:

Welcome, I find it tricky finding stuff on here as well even my own! I tend these days to search my stuff using my name as well, that usually finds it. But I like your Google idea may work for me as well looking for other stuff especially when I cannot remember who posted.

The search function on the forum is pretty good - I've always been able to find what I'm looking for

Any problems Dave give me a shout. I fitted the xls on a piece of styrene fixing that by using the screw holes in the front weight. I fitted the volume control by similar means on the rear weight under the dome as used by LGB.

Probably mostly me, when working in the IT Industry one of the things I never properly got the grips of Structured Query Language (SQL). But the Google Search Engine is a better searcher of so called “fuzzy” queries meaning that it can find things much easier. I suspect that Dave is finding that is so for his queries.

Have spent an 'interesting ' afternoon in the workshop, finally got the beast apart! Have labelled each set of screws ( and there are a lot! ) now faced with ' where can I fit the decoder?????' I have taken a photo on my iPhone but for some reason, it will not post on here????. Seems to be quite 'busy' under the boiler on my engine, it looks as if it has had the front part of the boiler hand painted silver, as well ( you will see what I mean, if and or when I can post a picture.................onward!!!
Oh by the way, Jon, that website is no longer active with service sheets but the trainli site has them to download in PDF form, which I have but thanks for the idea, it certainly moved me on, that and Kim's instructions.

OK , so it looks like I can put a picture on from my iMac, you will see that the 'bed ' is pretty full up with other boards, there does not seem to be any way of putting a 'double decker' board above any of the others, the only space i can see is in the smokebox, this is going to involve some sort of support for the decoder .My main concern about that is that it will be directly below the smoke stack and i am a bit concerned about smoke oil dripping down on to the decoder, I could try and fit a plastic shield above the decoder to avoid this happening.
another thing somebody may be able to help me with, in the loco instruction leaflet, it states that if DCC is installed, the rear lamp on the tender , will be alight at all times. Could i not wire this directly into the decoder on the 'rear light 'terminal?.....it states that it runs on 22V .
thanks

Which decoder are you fitting Dave? The loco is digital as made, I installed an xls in 250 due to a faulty board and liking the sounds I then fitted out 251.

Not convinced there is a decoder amongst that lot?? - Certainly already has sound, which could be used..

IF you are going to fit an XLS, then all that to the rear can be removed. - That is all the original sound card, et al..
You don't need the switch, and would be opening the DIP switches on the front-most card, as well..

I would be very tempted to remove the lot, and wire everything into the XLS.
You would be able to control the rear-facing light, as well, then.

If it's an xls going in then the whole lot can go, boards and connecting cables. If it's an xl then sound board needs to stay with an interface cable. On mine I have rewired the loco with track feed coming to a connector block and from there lights and smoke run at 24v with a 24v feed to the xls to control the motor speeds. I don't bother with a reversing light.
I agree with Phil that the plug in decoders from the top of each board are missing.

Thanks chaps, looking at it fresh, this morning, I have found the information in the instructions that I had missed, as I said to Kim in an email, last night, I have a new spare eMotion XL Massoth decoder 8150001 which I have had for some time , so it seemed an obvious choice to fit this.
Looking again at the paperwork, it looks the same as when I changed the decoders in the Meyer, wire in the 4 main connections ( track and motor) and change the 6 dip switches on the front most card and the no1 on the sound card.............I do have a nagging feeling that the adapter board that 'Muns' gave me had more than 4 wires on it..........think I have a picture of it somewhere .
The loco was very second hand and I bought it at a really silly price but since several of the chaps on the forum seem keen to suggest running an analogue loco on a digital system is not good, I decided this was a good option to digitalise it.
Really appreciate all of your help and suggestions
Thanks again

Haven't received an email Dave, must be stuck in the electronic jungle! Do the boards have the decoders plugged in on top of them, one on each?

Re plugging in the decoders Dave, bit of an older man memory lapse there. To restore the loco as is with full sound and digi control you will need 2 emotion m or l and they plug onto the board as per the pic. As for the back light you will need the bridging cable. Sorry for any mix up.

Oh sorry about that just found it in my Bookmarks and CnPasted it. Will have to remove it and find another as I often need the breakdowns myself. Wonder why it was closed up?
