Decoder & sound

Hi All,

I have a ...
LGB 2-6-2 with sound already fitted but no decoder & a LGB 2-6-0 with decoder but no sound !!!

Im looking at putting decoders & sound into both so would it be better to take the decoder out of the 2-6-0 & put into the 2-6-2, then purchase a new sound decoder for the other or would it be better to get 2 new sound decoders.

Any ideas please, many thanks

I'll answer with more questions!
Are you happy with the 2-6-2's sound? Early sound versions don't sound too good in my opinion. Will the sound accept parallel commands? If not would it be a problem? I ask as I recently chipped a loco with serial only sound and parallel only pulsed smoke, doable but "interesting"! The same goes for the chip in the Mogul, is it an older serial only version?

Neil about sums it up..
"Doable, but interesting!"

The older 'decoder' is probably a largish board with 'LGB-style' connectors for all the ancillaries..
If you go the route of swapping-out to a combined decoder, I would have a word with Mark ('Muns' on Forum), or your preferred supplier, about the Massoth replacement with the correct connectors to mate with your existing cables. - One less thing to be done. Especially with the 'LGB colour-code' of black or grey for everything!

Hi, know the it seems to be a lot easier and better to put new sound decoders into both of them,

Thankyou very much for your help,

(by the way the chip is the newer mfx model in the 2-6-0)

So I would possibly replace 'the lot' in the older one, and just add a 'S' decoder to the newest one.

What control system (Central Station) are you using?

Hi, im using the LGB MTS system

Hummm....
Then you might be better removing the MFX decoder?? - YMMV, of course.
I would certainly fit a switch to turnoff the MFX decoder for programming. - You can use the programming lock on a 'S' decoder.

Is it the very old 2-6-2 (2089s)with the Metal Rods? If so then the sound is a very analogue system and I am not sure if it would take a decoder.

lgb 2080s

However on the pics of this link if you look at them all, someone appears to have digitised one in Germany. That being the case your original plan may or may not work. However it depends on what the 2-6-0 has, if it is a Generic Decoder fitted Loco rather than an after purchase fitting with say a 55021 you may have lots of issues.

Also from memory and the link shows it the older 2080s relied on a 9v battery for some reason or other, perhaps to keep the Steam Hissing when stopped with no power. Tricky issue me thinks.

The 2-6-2 is model number 23802 with the plastic rods and the 2-6-0 is number 23741.

the 2-6-2 has a volume control in the side tank so no battery.

LGB 23802 is an MTS Sound Loco so will be decoder with sound fitted, could be that the decoder is set to a number you do not know? Do you have the knowledge or facility to check this? Either way it would only be a number between 01 and 22 so you could try each number till you are able to move the loco.

If you want to swap out a non-sound MFX decoder for a sound decoder, the simplest way is going to be with Massoth's XLS-M1 - the same price as a standard XLS, but made to simply plug straight into the 28-pin MFX decoder socket.
Talk to Mark (Muns on here), he should be able to sort you out with an XLS-M1 with the correct sound files for your loco.

Jon.
