DCC / Sound advice lgb 22801

Hi everyone,

I've just plumped for an LGB 22801 (nearly got the Piko Ludmilla - will probably treat myself later in year but the Harz Ballerina will work better with my passenger cars - and despite wanting steam engines only in EU style have Stainz - although picked up stunning bobo loco in January).

From my understanding the loco is a .1 no sound and suspect it will have the basic wiring - however looking through the diagrams it thankfully comes with a 4 plug gearbox (unlike the bobo).

Would a massoth L be suitable? I'm assuming so as it's a single motor block - but thought best to ask the experts.

In terms of sound it looks like the same boiler frame for the sound equipped 22802 and non sound 22801 - is anyone who's fitted a speaker to a 22801 able to give me a hint as to what speaker size is needed and how simple it is to fit the speaker?

Many Thanks

Alex

I'd be interested in this too, as I've also got a 22801 that I'd like to fit sound to....

The 57mm speaker is good for this loco - Massoth Part 8241010 http://gardenrailoutlet.co.uk/massoth-loudspeakers
As mentioned above Massoth do have a speaker installation kit 8314401 http://gardenrailoutlet.co.uk/massoth-lgb-2080-speaker-instalation-kit

The loco has a single motor so you could use a L (non sound) or an LS (sound) - I have used an XLS in my older 2080 but may swap it for an LS at some point - may be best to check the current draw of the loco first before deciding if a specific decoder is suitable.

I have a 22810 that I got from evilBay a few years ago, the seller said he thought (?) it was chipped, but didn't mention anything about sound - I got it for a very good price anyway, and when it arrived and I put it on the track, sounds came out!.....
I think that it has one of the LGB "black box" sound units in it, that the seller wasn't even aware of. I really ought to open it up one day, because something clunks inside the boiler and I think the black box may not be very well anchored down (if at all)!

The 22801 is known as the Ballerina, the Bull is the larger 2-10-2

I got one of those, with free sound, as well Jon. Ebay job. Pressed button 6 and the sound came out. I also think its a black box unit - can't change the address on sound and loco - and I have not bothered to look inside yet.

Mine came from a guy who had mis-posted it on evilBay, he'd stuck it in with all the OO gauge stuff so I think very few people looking for G got to see it - it was at a ridiculously low price even without the sound, as I recall I was a the only bidder! Sadly such things don't happen THAT often, but it shows that it is often worth just a cursory scan through categories on eBay other than the ones you specifically want......

Jon.

It depend how you search - easy not to get the little stuff.

My ebay search is always geared specifically to N scale these days - I don't even look at G any more as not actively working in that scale at the moment. Just occasionally I see a wrongly categorized item or two (mostly 00), it's sometimes worth a cheeky low opening bid just in case!

You need to be careful using that board, it will only work with the correct main board - usually fitted to the 23802. It might work - but just as well, it might not!

That board is a V1, and will be serial! - I have just added a decoder to one of these which had one fitted.
That is why it is only 49 euro.

Thanks Guys,

Massoth adaptor plate looks like an essential purchase - saves using hot glue gun like the online Massoth wiki shows in its example.

Ta,

Alex

Useful but not essential Alex. I wrap mine up in plastic and just pop it in loose. If there is room. On larger locos, like big diesels, I put one screw through a hole in the board and fix to the base of the loco. See what looks right

I think he is referring to the loudspeaker mounting plate??

SO!
It is YOU who stuffs decoders in loco's in plastic bags!! :(

Sorry! Don't like it one bit..
<Pedant mode OFF>

Guilty. But it works.:D
