Controller enquiry

Dont laugh Jon, many a true word is spoken in jest. It is actually the first thing we're told to do by the (useless) IT dept at work
It even applies to apple products when they do go wrong.

You sure you not been watching the IT Crowd? You could also add ‘have you switched off and restarted it’ as a standard fix for Windows based machines.
The organistion I was working for was a small one and had only bought in its first computer system a couple of years before I started. The peak time was summer when the machine was kept working 24 hoiurs a day for a few weeks and with only one computer operator, other staff had to assist. One weekend during the peak time the first year the system was being used, a member of staff who had been involved with the setting up of the ystem (but wasn't computer trained) went in on a Saturday morning to check om something, pressed the start button and nothing happened He repeated this a number of times with no success so called the company who provided service support, only to be told that the service contract was Monday to Friday but they could come in outside these times but it would be expensive; he decided that they should come in despite the cost, and lo and behold, the "problem" was that the machine wasn't plugged in!

Many decades ago, my mother had a similar problem when our new Color TV console stopped working. The service guy was very apologetic that he still had to charge her for the service call to plug it back into the wall socket. At least she was able to laugh about it.
