I want to view my trains arriving at the station in the front garden whilst operating in the back garden. I thought live CCTV would be the answer with no time delays. Does anyone have such a system? Can any one recommend a live CCTV system suitable for my needs please?

I put a Tapo (TP Link) webcam in my loft as I have a problem with birds getting in. I believe it is weather-proof and there is a battery version available (mine is mains). Shows a good colour picture when it detects movement. Cost between £30-40 IIRC.

I use Arlo Secure cameras around my place. They are weatherproof and can run off small solar panels. I’ve got 15 I think. They are not absolutely instant as they run off WiFi, but pretty much instant. You can run them motion detection or just switch on and watch.

I had a local company fit CCTV for me, justified by having cameras to monitor expected possible bad person entry points with some cameras doing dual purpose of railway as well some cameras just railway. Lidl or Aldi occasionally do systems but reviews I read spoke about difficulty of setting them up. I did buy one from Toshibo many moons ago when they were still on the high street, had camera and screen quite good for the price. But probably impossible to source these days. Some just sell cameras that will work through TV.

Possibly easiest if you do not want an expensive system with many cameras, look at Baby monitors or door camera systems. One of either may suit you needs at a resonable cost.

I've had/still have several cameras over the years, both for home security and trains. To monitor the hidden ramp I have a fixed 'bullet' camera; in the shed, a remotely controlled tilt and turn. I prefer wired but nowadays ones which use the home wifi are easier to install. There is a huge choice out there and usually you get what you pay for, but also pitfalls, for example you don't need those that insist on a paid cloud storage solution and some cameras can only be viewed through specific software on a mobile device and cannot be streamed to a PC. I find the older or cheaper cameras do suffer from wifi lag, especially when actually looking at a moving train, which is not what you want.

Based on my good and bad experiences, I would suggest a good mid-range outdoor camera, mains powered, provided you have a strong home wifi signal at its intended location, then you can use a mobile phone to monitor and control it via the same wifi network, or even away from home via your provider network. My most recent camera from Amazon is this one (Aosu CCTV Camera) and it is genuinely streets ahead of anything else I've used: easy to set up out of the box, has excellent app software (no subscription), is reliable, controllable, is smart (ie can pan to track movement), works well at night too (IR and floodlight), and is great value, especially if you can get it with Amazon's current deals. Most importantly, I find it has virtually no wifi lag, so would be great for railway monitoring, though as I say, a good signal strength is vital.

(with slight digital delay )
my wife views the chickens /chicken doors on a really great bit of out door kit from ebay, toolstation, argos, amazon etc (loads of them about) from Blink. it runs in AA batteries that seam to last FOREVER ! you do need a hub and a camera but it works really quite well Cameras and Systems — Blink Smart Security, PS the chicken coop is a good way away from the hub (14m) so good for remote viewing.

Aside, I bet you could sit one of these "inside" a coach and run live "views from the train"

For a 1 off camera set up it was £50, (camera £28, hub £22) but i can add cameras to it later for more views. 1 or 2 second delay at most.

(for live)
If you want "live" then it needs to be "wired" and the house cctv kit I use is this SWANN from screwfix
but the problem you run in to here is that the link to your phone or similar is "limited" as the app is "average" and this is where the delay is found, you would need to have a "live" monitor next to the camera hub box which is quite bulky.

(simple)
Set up a digital doorbell on the location ? these often have a great "motion" alert so will warn you when the train is coming ! i have a reolink and the motion sensor is "overtly" sensitive and always pinging my phone !
REOLINK from screwfix and costs about £70
