Calm before the storm

Shawn

Hiking, cross country skiing, snowshoeing
Winter storm warnings and Blizzard warnings are up for the area. 12+ inches are in the forcast with high winds. The guys on the KMRR have the plow ready and sitting at the Hainsville Yard. The wood stove is cranking as the guys wait in the shop for the first flakes. Temp is 19F. They will try to keep the line open for as long as they can. The worst is supposeto be late today through the night. As long as we dont lose power the guys will keep everyone updated.

Snow is coming down now. Ran the plow through once. Now sitting in the tunnel waiting for the tracks to get covered. Then plowing fun starts. Wind is also picking up. Stove is cranking nice.

Shawn, have just heard on BBC Radio News that your area of the US has received blizzard warnings, and that, as you say, you are about to receive considerable snowfall. Garden railway pictures apart, the very best of luck for the next few days! Keep that stove burning brightly .....

Regards

Alec K

Thanks Alec. We are in for a good one. I have my wood stove going. Im sure I will lose power tonight.

All is quite in the backwoods. The sawmill is shut down for the day and not much activitey going on the camp.

Brilliant pics keep them coming

The guys made there first round through the main line. Started to run into some problems through the backcountry, wheels started slipping from icy tracks. Not sure how much longer they guys will be able to keep this up. Not worth getting stuck in the backcountry during a blizzard. The snow is picking up and will be getting dark out soon.

Nice pictures. Real motion time. Looks real. Obviously doomed in the next few hours at this speed of development. Pity.

Now, where's the coffee..............

While the crew was out plowing in the mountains the shop crew took the oppertunity to take some snow shots of the new climax. Ralphy has his snowshoes on posing for the picture.

Lovely pics Shawn good to see it's not just us with the snow had to clear 5" today to make way for the Boxing Day freight .

Thinking of you, Shawn! That's quite some staff commitment on the part of the railway operating team - I've been watching the snow get deeper with each succeeding picture. There's something very real about the scenes you've set; not surprising, really, given that what is happening to your railway and home is completely real.

Let's hope your overhead power lines maintain supplies to you and that you're well stocked up with resources. I would guess that you're used to it!

Kind regards

Alec K

With daylight running out, icy rails, snow and wind picking up the boss decided to suspend operations until the storm is over. Cant afford any injuries or getting stuck in the backcountry. The engine was put away for the evening and the plow left out. With dusk approaching rapidly the guys took shelter, sitting by the warm stoves, sipping a hot cup of coffee, some moon shine and telling stories in the candle lite buildings. Here are some scenes along the railroad.

Great pictures, Shawn - full of atmosphere. Hope Mr Russell doesn't get lost on his way to the biffy when the blizzard starts!

The winds are really howling out. Snow drifting all over the line. Everyone is settling in for the night. Sleeping bags are out in front of the fires. Going to be a long night. Hopefully no damage to the line. Everyone will be dreaming of those lazy days of summer.

From CBS tonite, it sounds as if you are going to get a dumping of snow, a tropical low to the level of a hurricane with some parts of the NorEast getting 2-4" of snow each HOUR....

A great set of pictures. Thanks for sharing them. BBC news reports that a state of emergency has been declared in many of the east coast states.

Well the guys survived the night but woke up to high winds and blowing snow. Cant tell how much snow has fallen. We have anything from bare spots to 4-5ft drifts. Here is a short video of the line. Sorry not the best it was cold ALMOST FROZE TO DEATH.. Temp is 15F with wind chills well below zero. Near white out conditions at times with the 50+MPH WINDS. Lost power for a while but thank god for my wood stove.
