Cab view camera

Have had a bargain-basement 808 key fob spy camera for a few years that I use for track inspections.

The video quality was perfectly OK but the build quality is hopeless - you can never tell whether the button switches are working. Just wasted an hour or two trying to get it to work without success, so it'll have to go.

Do I replace it with another 808 after more hours studying http://www.chucklohr.com/808/ (which I see is not very up to date)?

Or bite on the bullet and pay Five times as much for a Mobius Actioncam or similar?

Or Twenty times as much for a GoPro?

Is there nothing else any good between the two lower price points?

All reports of experiences welcomed!

Lidl just had a pretty good one in for around £35, it was a Car Camera, but will do the job as well. Takes a Mini SD Card.

Not sure if they still have them now, you may be lucky if you have one near you.

I and a few others use one of these - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MD80-MINI-DV-dvr-SPORTS-MINIATURE-CAM-bike-motorbike-camera-video-MODEL-AIRCRAFT-/321485503642?pt=UK_AudioTVElectronics_Video_Camcorders&hash=item4ada077c9a

Probably the same circuitry as your keyfob camera - sometimes it's hard to tell when the button has been pressed - but I've found the quality to be fine - eg see

Do you need the camera in the cab? If not then why not use an ordinary small digital camera? Either your usual one or a cheapo one purely for the railway.
I simply sit mine onto a flat wagon and run it around the layout. That gives 1080p resolution.

Thanks to all.

For track inspections I mount the existing 808 camera on a loose bogie or leading truck of the loco.

Thanks Rik I have just looked at MD80 MINI DV specs and although packaging is different the innards appear same as the 808. Not knowing when/whether the Start button has been pressed is precisely my problem!

Does anyone use the Mobius that seems to have a strong following in aircraft RC - albeit at some £45?

It's a while since I last used it - but this video has reminded me there is a series of LEDs which indicate when it's on and when it's recording etc. So not entirely guesswork.

Yes, but which ones Ross? There are dozens of 808 models and hundreds of variations. Its a lottery. And thats without counting the fakes.

Thinking about the MD80 Rik, I suppose that three buttons and two LEDs would be a great improvement on the two buttons and one LED that I have now - provided the buttons are reasonably robust

Any other users of this out there please?
