Bulk Buys from East Coast Rail

On The Bay today is a buy it now listing for 12 brand new boxed coaches from East Coast Rail, Item no 221607250625 and another well crafted bulk buy it now for 12 wagons Item No 221612043851 for £200. Looking at the long list of this trader's current items, most are not seemingly rail hobby related at all, the item description carefully avoids any ref to a manufacturer and the single photograph shows very little of the actual item(s) on offer. £1,260 for the coaches with such little detail provided seems a real jump in the dark, more so when a punter has recently provided neg feedback for his purchase a new loco that doesn't run and is (possibly) being replaced.

Anyone know who manufactures the items on offer, or better still has any experience of the retailer. The seller is not providing the address of a commercial premises hence my reservations.

The items are Newqida. It would appear the dealer (East Coast Rotor) bought a vast quantity of them as there are all sorts of offers on ebay. The dealer seems to sell model helicopter bits.

If they're asking over £1200 for 12 of the coaches (over £100 each), they are MASSIVELY overcharging for them. As Mike says, they are the Newqida ones and would normally retail anything between about £35 and £50 each - certainly don't pay any more than that for them!

John "Twojags" Prescott of G Scale Online has a few in his closing down sale for around £30 or so right now.

They're not too bad, really need metal wheels (use the Bachmann ones at about £16 for four axles) and new (LGB) coupling springs adding to make them run well; at the normal prices they are a good way of getting a nice rake of coaches quite cheaply. For £100 a pop, you could get secondhand "proper" LGB ones!

I recall seeing various "cases" of coaches and freight around the Christmas period from ECR on ebay and at that time they certainly were not £1200, I can't remember the exact figure but it worked out at a much more reasonable circa £30 each from memory for coaches.

Yes I've bought from there a couple of times and not had a problem in fact Jon was helpful recently finding me a suitable return for a project I had in mind at reasonable cost.

I'd assume it's a typo sort of error.

Dave

He was selling individual coaches for £30 before Christmas, post free.
Just one warning, with these you get what you pay for.

Just taken up a second chance offer on one coach, costing £24.01 with postage, to go with one I recently bought for £30 from another eBay seller , pleased with the one I have, good value!

Yes, at that sort of money they are excellent value. Would definitely recommend adding some metal wheels to them though, as per my earlier post.

Jon.

I've used this seller several times without problem. As stated above you get what you pay for, but i have just purchased THREE coaches on a buy-it-now for £74.95 including shipping which is less than 25 quid a go. Just check out his "sellers other items". I reckon at this price they are a real snip.

Coach received damaged today, sent by Hermes, packed in a cardboard sleeve which offered no protection when box was squashed , broken pulleys and some vents on roof, end details and coupling, seller has been advised! Asked for replacement coach or roof and couplings, awaiting response

He's actually sold 2 lots for 1200 GBP! ??? Many of his freight offerings are 4 times what I would pay here in NZ. The only way to buy off him would be on auction, where some of you seem to have picked up a bargain.

For what it's worth, Hammond Toys are still discounting most of the Newqida stock. I'm tempted to order something, before the govt. slaps GST on all internet purchases, promised later this year!

Got my 3 coaches. Packing was minimal - just a layer of corrugated cardboard - but boxes were packed with the see-through fronts to the inside. Upon opening, all three unscathed despite a bit of crush damage to the box corners. Perhaps I've been lucky every time so far, but see no reason not to use again. I think this was my fifth order.

There was an earlier thread on this and I contacted East Coast Rail as follows:

Hi there,

I wonder if a decimal point has slipped in some of your items. Take these packs of 1 oil tankers at £1180.00, that's £98.33 each. But in the description you say that they are £30 plus in the retail shops, which would be £360.00 for a pack of 12. Should the price be £118 or £180?

There seems to be a similar problem with some individual items, too.

Best regards

and here is their reply on 12th February:

Hi
All of our g scale has been bought up.
Rather than ending all the listings, we have increased the price to a very high price so that nobody buys them,.
When our new stock arrives wednesday next week, i will put the prices back to normal.
To order or pre-order/reserve please contact us.

So I guess they must have sold out again.

An explanation, but a bit lazy..
I wonder what EvilBay, or Trading Standards, would think of the practice?

Would not an 'out of stock' graphic be a better alternative?

Perhaps it's a way of avoiding some Ebay fees? Or, because he doesn't want to have to re-do all the ads.

and they are hoping some berk falls for it.
