Bachmann Toby Tram Engine ~ New Motor

A friend of mine's grandson has managed to fry his Toby, probably due to it running on NMRA setting, with his other TTTE locos.

I reckon it's the motor burnt out. Does anyone know if there are any circuit boards inside this loco, and if spare motors are easy to come by?

TIA....

Not sure how useful this will be, but this is what the bachmann's website shows when you look up spare parts.

Interesting. I wasn't aware they had a complete "Thomas" chassis inside their Toby the Tram.
If yours looks like the photo above then the motor is available from Bachmann Parts.
Thomas : Bachmann Trains Online Store!
Looks like just 4 items as spares on Toby on the US parts site
So a separate motor may not be available, just the complete chassis as shown etc
Stocks look low , there may only be two available
The cost after mailing and duties are paid will probably put the ‘reach doorstep price as a bit stiff’
Would Bachmann UK be able to help
Good luck

Some time ago, I had a problem with 'Thomas' where it would just sit on the track and make a 'whizzing ' noise, on investigation, I found that the screws holding the motor into the gearbox had come loose, soon fixed, just a thought.

Just had a look at the other Thomas characters, it looks like they all use the same motor.
Which can be ordered separately.
Just not sure if Toby has a worm gear like the others inside that metal gearbox.

Can i ask if you are on DCC with a decoder, if so did you connect direct to the motor terminals if not try that as I was advised to remove the resistor block on the motor when fitting a decoder, cannot see how you can damage the motor by running on NIMRA. I have a new spare motor if you are not able to buy one from Bachmann Europe, based in Barwell

No it's not DCC, but Analogue.

Grandson ran Toby in a lash up with all his other TTTE locos, but as it was running in the opposite direction to the rest of the fleet, it got toasted!

Grandad John tells me there is a slip of paper advising that it has a thermal breaker inside. I assume that is what is on the photo posted by AusrailQLD.

He has being trying to disassemble it today, and sent me an exploded diagram, but he is struggling, so I am going to call round on my way home from work tomorrow afternoon.

But thank you everyone for the posts? I'll e-mail John now and I will bear it in mind that you have a spare motor Tony....

I visited John today on my way home from work.

He had the patient disassembled ready for Dr Gizzy to do his magic.

Firstly, I took the motor out of the gearbox and applied power. Motor working!

I checked across the thermal cut out and found a short across it, so I assumed this was working.

We set the polarity switch to Large Scale (as opposed to NMRA), and tested the chassis on the track.

We had a fault light on John's new LGB 5A controller.

I found that the pickup wires had a dead short across them. So I took each axle out in turn and con-checked with my Multi-meter.

The middle axle had a dead short across it!

So I sleeved the brass pickups to that axle with some wire insulation of an appropriate size, and put the whole thing back together as a rolling chassis.

Result....
