Bachmann Railtruck Bevel Gear

As some may see I have an issue with my Railtruck, going up an incline a 'ratcheting' noise could be heard which I thought I had fixed. Complete strip of the gearbox and the plate holding the bearing was loose (blue arrow), having tighten the screws, and run it in its stripped dow condition it seemed to be solved. Reassembled, second circuit and the problem is back, stripped and closer inspection found the bevel gear (red arrow) is split. Bachmann part 00Q03 is available from the US, but does anybody know of a UK supplier.

Bachmann do sadly appear to have issues with their gears, we often get reports of it in here. Hope you get a replacement ok Jimmy.

The big issue is that they originally used gears that were force fitted on the axle - fluctuating temperatures in storage cause the gears to split over time.

The replacement items that they have re-designed are either in brass or have a 'D' shape to fit on the axle.

These are actually hexagonal.
A bit surprising that they've split, then

As Philp says, Bachmann Europe may have some, but they don't always know what they've got. I was charged for a gear and postage, but it wasn't for the correct loco.

The Railtruck may be easier, as there haven't been different versions as far as I know.

Apparently they no longer stock Bachmann USA parts!
No, but if you rant and rave down the phone, they sometimes find they have something lurking - however, it may not be the right something.

I struck lucky after they supplied me the wrong gear, tac came to my rescue as he had a couple from the USA :)

Typical!

I have been given details of EKM Exhibitions as a possible stockist, online enquire sent, if this fails, then it would seem that the postage to the USA will need to be forked out. I will keep you informed, because the more items ordered the more cost effective the postage.

My devious mind starts thinking that, as it only has to propel itself, whether there is another motor / gearbox combo that could do the trick - possibly from the Tamiya range :think:

But is is propelled via a gear box, prop shaft, diff and rear axle. It is bizarre though, that is starts off will a longitudinal rotation, goes through a helix to change to a lateral rotation, and then through bevel gears back to a longitudinal for the prop shaft, into the diff with a bevel to convert back to a lateral rotation.

Yes, I noticed the contortions.

The Tamiya offerings are quite small, so could, in theory, be re-located - I've never played with the Bachmann railtruck, so I could be talking out of my rear orifice.

But, being self-propelled and not expected to haul anything, the complexities of the gear train are, indeed, baffling.

You can get bevel gears from Aliexpress in China. Take a look at this thread:
Bachmann Rail Truck Axle Fix - Maybe

P.S. I still have the spares mentioned in the article.
Very interesting, what is even more bizarre, is my drive shafts are hexagonal!

A quick google and it would seem Amazon also sell these, must take some measurements, and a few more searches.

I'm surprised. Are you talking about the shaft the split gear is on? I'd expect it to be the same as the rear shaft which has flats either side:

There are 3 bevel gears, and all three have the same part number, one either end of the prop shaft and one on the rear axle, but after your comment, I have just taken a closer look, and with good light and under a magnifier, mine IS the same as yours.

There are 3 bevel gears,
I think you'll find there are 4- there's one on the motor gearbox output shaft too.
:) I suspect the whole output drive shaft is the same at the rear axle as it is at the motor.
Those bevels I found do mesh with the existing gears, as noted in the thread I posted.

The main gearbox only has a single stand-alone bevel gear the other bevel is part a gear wheel:
