I am presently repowering one of these little monsters. However, the axel mounted gears have split. This seems to be a common problem. Would anyone know of a source for new gears?

Thanks for those sites. The NWSL site looks promissing.
I have just received my first ever Delrin chain and sprockets. I am using them to help power the trailing car. This may open up a whole new world to me. Whoopie !!

Delrin?? as in sorta Nylon material? Chains and sprockets now that sounds very usefull. I have the mechano sprockets and chain and also some very very small bycycle type chain and sprockets from a card punch machine I DISMANTELED in the 70's.
Is the Delrin easily obtained?

Good call John the motionco site is great!
I have broken the chain in the drive on one of my Accucraft 'Geese' this looks just the place to go!

yeah, I have mentioned motionco on here before. Have bought gears from them in the past.

I ordered the axel gear from NWSL a few days ago and it arrived today. It's already installed on the handcar axel, and the mechanism works as it should.
I was just browsing Ebay and found a gray Bachmann handcar and trailer in parts. I had no idea Bachmann had re-engineered the drive system. It uses a regular motor with worm gears at each end. It's a much more robust system than the original yellow model.

Browsing Youtube, for Bachmann handcars, I ran across this, which I thought was an excellent illustration on the mechanics of a handcar. It also shows how close the Bachmann version is to the prtotype.

I was wondering about going over points, but he states that the bike handles them fairly well. In my opinion, he needs a latteral set of the small guide wheels placed right under the front bicycle wheel. that's in addition to the forward set he already has.

Reminds me of a stunt my buddy and I pulled when we were 15. We thought that we could get our bike wheels down into the trolley tracks in the street. Well the tires fit the groove but we lost all balance.

That two person handcar seems a bit light as it moves easily. The four person ones were much heaver. A number of years ago, I was part of a four person team that raced in the US National Handcar Races. We raced for time over a measured distance and it was really hard work. You don't let go of the bar for anything. If you did, you were likely to get your jaw broken. :(

Do you have a photo & dimensions of the motor ? Try ebay - not necessarily for the original part but for a compatible motor?

Bachmann have usually used Pittman motors - but you'll need one to take 18v.
