This spirit fired Aster Garratt AD60 is seen running in the UK during the last few days where the day time temperature is 3 below

Assuming that these engines operated in NSW Australia, I am not sure whether the weather conditions were as cold. The last time I was in Sydney the weather was hot as you would expect I guess.
Obviously NSW covers a huge area so maybe there are parts which are cold where these Garratts ran?

Extending the chimney down into the smoke box is exactly what L.D.Porta advocated, it should finish just below the top of the blast nozzle, as you see it works.

Yes NSW is home to these monsters. It gets cold here but only for short periods and does snow in the highlands. I don't know if Garratts worked over the Blue Mountains or on the Southern Highlands in Winter I do remember them working on the Illawarra Line which is wet rather that cold.... I could ask a mate who is more au fait with Garratt workings....
