Aristo GP40

Pretty hard to find as the GP-40 as this and the Consolidation were new designs with a only a few made before Aristo went bust.

A fair few GP40s had problems with gearbox failure. As no spares are available (its not the same truck as other Aristo 4 wheel trucks) this probably makes them rarer. Mine suddenly stopped when pulling only six wagons with a completely stripped gear in one of the power trucks. I fixed it by putting a couple of USAT power trucks underneath instead.
I've got one of what must be the ultra rare Rock Island jobs sold only through RLD Hobbies.

Chris, are different from the 3 axle bogies in the Dash-9 and SD-45?

Actually, there is no difference in the gearboxes. I would wager the gearbox failure Chris saw was a result of the bad motors that were shipped in the first batch.

They tended to go up in smoke, and when you have 2 separate power trucks in the same loco running at radically different speeds, gearbox damage usually results.

So don't worry about the gearboxes, but do worry about the motors, if you are buying a used one, you need to check the current draw of the motors first if possible.

Here's in depth analysis of the problem, and resolution:
